Chapter 2: The Truth Beneath the Surface

The girl was still kneeling by the fountain, clutching the soaked medal to her chest, shaking so badly she could barely breathe.

The man finally walked toward her.

Slowly, carefully, as if approaching something fragile that had already been broken too many times.

He removed his coat and draped it over her shoulders.

“No one will take it again,” he said.

The girl looked up at him through wet hair. “She… she has my scholarship letter…”

The man’s jaw tightened.

He turned his head slightly toward the wealthy woman.

“You tore up a federal scholarship document in front of witnesses,” he said. “Do you understand what that means?”

A murmur rippled through the room.

The wealthy woman scoffed, but it wasn’t as confident anymore. “It’s just a letter. I can replace it ten times over.”

That’s when the principal finally spoke, voice trembling.

“Ma’am… that wasn’t just a school scholarship.”

The room went quiet again.

He hesitated before continuing.

“It was fully funded through a national education endowment. Interfering with it… is not a school matter.”

The woman’s expression shifted slightly.

For the first time, uncertainty crept into her posture.

The man stepped closer to the fountain, holding up one of the wet, torn pieces of paper someone had recovered.

“You didn’t just embarrass a student,” he said. “You interfered with protected federal aid.”

A beat.

“And you did it in front of cameras.”

The phones that had been recording earlier suddenly felt heavier in everyone’s hands.

The woman’s voice lowered. “Who exactly are you?”

He finally met her eyes.

“Someone you should’ve asked about before you threw that medal.”
