Chapter 1 — The Secret Buried for Twenty-Five Years
Silence consumed the ballroom.
Every guest stood frozen, staring at the silver seashell pendant trembling in the man's hand.
The older woman's face drained of color.
"No..." she whispered. "That's impossible."
The man ignored her.
His eyes never left the young woman standing before him.
"What did you say your mother's name was?"
The girl wiped away her tears with shaking fingers.
"My adoptive parents told me her name was Isabella. She died shortly after giving birth to me. They never knew who my father was."
The man's breathing grew uneven.
"My mother's name was Isabella."
A wave of shocked murmurs swept across the room.
He slowly reached into his tuxedo pocket and pulled out his wallet.
Hidden behind his driver's license was an old, faded photograph.
It showed two laughing children on a beach.
Around the little girl's neck hung the exact same silver seashell pendant.
He held the picture beside the pendant.
Every detail matched.
The engraving.
The scratches.
Even the tiny chip near the clasp.
His voice cracked.
"My little sister disappeared twenty-five years ago."
The ballroom erupted.
The older woman stumbled backward.
"No... this can't be happening."
The man turned toward her with burning eyes.
"You knew."
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
"I've spent half my life searching for her," he said.
"And you tried to humiliate her because you thought she was poor."
