Chapter 1: The Debt Beneath the Ashes

No one in the ballroom dared breathe.

The old woman never took her eyes off Julian Vane.

"I gave you thirty years," she said quietly. "Thirty years to tell the truth."

Julian's face drained of color.

"I don't know who you think you are."

A faint smile crossed her weathered face.

"No," she replied. "You know exactly who I am."

She reached into the torn lining of her coat and removed a rusted silver pocket watch.

Gasps echoed through the room.

Julian staggered backward.

It was impossible.

The watch had belonged to Arthur Hawthorne—Julian's former business partner.

The man everyone believed had died in a tragic warehouse fire three decades ago.

"I buried this with him," Julian whispered.

"No."

The woman shook her head.

"You buried your lies with him."

She opened the watch.

Inside was a faded photograph.

Arthur.

His wife.

And a little girl no older than six.

The old woman pointed at the child.

"That's me."

Silence swallowed the ballroom.

"My name is Eleanor Hawthorne."
