THE ROSEWOOD BAND / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7 - The Two Locked Boxes.

North Federal Bank opened at eight thirty in the morning.

Victoria, Emily, and Sophie were waiting across the street at eight ten.

Daniel had taken Lily to school under strict instructions not to tell anyone where Emily had gone.

The precaution felt absurd until Victoria noticed the black sedan parked half a block away.

It was the same model used by the investigators who had gone to Miriam's apartment.

"We're being watched," Emily said.

Sophie did not turn her head.

"I assumed we would be."

Victoria looked at the bank entrance.

"Then we make them watch us win."

At eight twenty-five, the sedan door opened.

Graham Vale stepped onto the sidewalk.

Emily's breath caught.

"He came himself."

Graham did not approach them.

He entered the bank through a side entrance used by private clients.

Victoria felt urgency sharpen into fear.

"How could he know?"

Sophie looked at her ring.

"Maybe he finally understood what the numbers meant."

The main doors unlocked.

The three women crossed the street immediately.

A private banking officer recognized Victoria and smiled too quickly.

"Ms. Rosewood, good morning."

"I need access to two legacy deposit boxes transferred from First Commonwealth."

Victoria placed the engraved numbers on a slip of paper.

The officer read them.

His expression changed.

"One moment."

He disappeared through a glass door.

Emily whispered, "That's not a good face."

He returned with the branch manager.

"Ms. Rosewood, box 8841 is active, but box 8842 has a pending legal hold."

Victoria felt her stomach drop.

"Placed by whom?"

"Vale Legal Group, acting for the Rosewood Family Trust."

Emily turned toward the private corridor.

"He's already here trying to lock it."

Victoria looked at the manager.

"Who is the registered owner?"

He checked the screen.

"Eleanor Rosewood Irrevocable Trust, beneficiary Emily Rosewood."

Emily stepped forward.

"I'm Emily Rosewood."

The manager looked startled.

"We were informed the beneficiary was unavailable."

"Unavailable is an interesting word for alive."

Victoria almost smiled.

The manager cleared his throat.

"I will need identification and trust documentation."

"The documentation may be inside the box you're refusing to let her open."

"I understand the problem."

"Then solve it."

The old Victoria might have accepted a delay while lawyers spoke to lawyers.

The new Victoria had spent twenty years learning what delays were designed to accomplish.

She placed Eleanor's letter on the desk.

"This bank inherited the fiduciary obligations of First Commonwealth."

The manager read enough to become uncomfortable.

"Please give me a few minutes."

A voice came from behind them.

"There is no need."

Graham approached in a dark gray suit carrying a leather folder.

He looked rested, controlled, and entirely unlike a man caught on security footage entering a garage before dawn.

"Good morning, Victoria."

"Were you hoping to find something before we did?"

Graham ignored the question.

"The Emily Rosewood trust was legally terminated in 2006."

Emily stepped beside Victoria.

"With forged documents."

"That is your allegation."

"And Victoria's."

Graham looked at Victoria.

"Your recent conduct has raised concerns about your judgment."

Victoria understood the message.

The board resolution was already being used as a weapon.

"My judgment is good enough to recognize my own signature."

"We can litigate that."

"We will."

Graham handed the branch manager a court filing.

"Until then, the bank has notice of a dispute and should preserve the box unopened."

The manager read it.

Sophie leaned toward Victoria.

"He filed for emergency relief at seven this morning."

"Can he do that?"

"Anyone can file. Whether he gets it is another question."

Graham smiled faintly.

"The court has already set a hearing for this afternoon."

Emily's temper snapped.

"You stole from me and now you're asking a judge to protect the evidence?"

"I advise you to choose your words carefully."

Emily moved one step closer.

"I chose them twenty years late."

Victoria placed a hand lightly on her sister's arm.

Not to silence her.

To remind her that Graham wanted a scene he could describe later as instability.

Emily understood and stepped back.

The branch manager spoke.

"Box 8842 will remain sealed until the court clarifies access."

Victoria felt defeat for exactly one second.

Then she remembered.

"What about 8841?"

The manager looked at the screen.

"There is no hold on that box."

Graham's expression changed.

Only slightly.

Victoria saw it.

"Whose box is 8841?"

"The Eleanor Rosewood Irrevocable Trust for Victoria Rosewood."

Victoria held up her identification.

"Open it."

Graham stepped forward.

"I object."

The manager looked almost apologetic.

"You have no filing regarding 8841."

"The instruments are related."

"Then you should have included both."

For once, paperwork turned against Graham.

Victoria followed the manager through two security doors into the vault.

Emily was permitted to accompany her as a witness.

Sophie remained outside to monitor Graham.

Box 8841 was longer than Victoria expected.

The manager used the bank key.

Victoria used the access key associated with the transferred account, which had been stored under dual-control records since First Commonwealth closed.

The lock turned.

The manager carried the metal box into a private viewing room and left them alone.

Victoria lifted the lid.

Inside was a sealed document packet, a small velvet bag, and a photograph of Victoria and Emily as teenagers standing beside Eleanor in a rose garden.

Emily touched the photograph.

"She planned all of this."

"She planned for the possibility that we'd need it."

Victoria opened the document packet.

The first page bore an embossed notarial seal.

ELEANOR ROSEWOOD REVOCABLE TRUST, AMENDED AND RESTATED.

The amendment date matched the week Eleanor gave them the rings.

Victoria read quickly.

Upon Eleanor's death, specified family assets were to be divided equally into two irrevocable descendant trusts.

Neither Charles nor any officer of Rosewood Holdings could alter the beneficial ownership.

Marriage, occupation of spouse, residence, or estrangement from family were explicitly prohibited as grounds for forfeiture.

Emily covered her mouth.

"She wrote Daniel into the protection without knowing him."

Victoria read the clause again.

"She wrote Father out of the decision."

The next document was even more important.

A schedule of assets listed twenty percent of Rosewood Holdings voting shares for each granddaughter, plus investment accounts and real estate.

Victoria sat back.

"Emily, this isn't just money."

"What?"

"Your voting shares were taken too."

Emily looked stunned.

"How many?"

"Enough that together we would have controlled forty percent."

They stared at each other.

Charles had not simply objected to Daniel's class.

Emily's marriage had given him a reason to execute a plan that protected his control of the company.

Victoria reached for the velvet bag.

Inside was a small audio cassette labeled FOR MY GRANDDAUGHTERS.

"We need a player," Emily said.

"The one from Union Station."

Victoria had left it secured in her home safe.

She placed everything back except the certified trust copies she was legally entitled to inspect and reproduce under the bank's procedures.

Before closing the box, Emily noticed a narrow envelope beneath the photograph.

It was addressed in Eleanor's handwriting.

To Margaret.

Their mother.

Victoria opened it with trembling hands.

Margaret,

If Charles attempts to separate the girls, you must choose them over him.

Victoria stopped reading.

Emily took the letter.

Her face changed line by line.

At the bottom, Eleanor had written:

You know what he did to his brother Thomas.

Do not let him do the same to our daughters.

Emily looked up.

"Who is Thomas?"

Victoria felt a memory surface from childhood.

A family portrait with one man cut from the edge.

A name no one used.

"Father had a younger brother."

"Had?"

"He died when we were children."

Emily looked back at the letter.

"What did Father do to him?"

Victoria had no idea.

When they returned to the lobby, Graham was gone.

Sophie stood near the windows holding her phone.

"We have another problem."

Victoria handed her the certified amendment.

"We also have the trust."

Sophie scanned the first page and nearly smiled.

"This changes everything."

"What's the problem?"

Sophie turned her phone toward them.

A major financial news site had published an article twelve minutes earlier.

ROSEWOOD BOARD QUESTIONS CHAIRWOMAN'S FITNESS AMID FAMILY DISPUTE.

The article cited unnamed sources claiming Victoria had become emotionally unstable after contact with an estranged relative seeking money.

Emily read it in silence.

Then her face became cold.

"They turned me into the addict again."

Victoria read the next paragraph.

The article alleged Emily had a history of substance abuse, financial dependency, and attempts to pressure the Rosewood family for payment.

Every old lie had been polished and released as current fact.

At the bottom was a statement from Rosewood Holdings counsel.

Graham Vale.

Victoria folded the printed copy Sophie handed her.

"He wants the board afraid of scandal before the vote."

Sophie nodded.

"And the emergency hearing is in four hours."

Emily looked at the bank vault doors.

"Then we open my box in court."

Victoria's phone buzzed.

This time the message came from Charles.

COME HOME ALONE.

I WILL TELL YOU WHAT HAPPENED TO THOMAS.

As they left the bank, Emily stopped beneath the stone archway and looked back at the vault corridor.

For twenty years, she had imagined her inheritance as something already gone.

Now she understood it had been hidden behind layers of paperwork, intimidation, and carefully timed silence.

Victoria stood beside her without speaking.

The two women did not need another promise.

The certified pages inside Victoria's bag were enough.

For the first time, the past had produced something stronger than memory.
