Chapter 2 – The Family They Tried to Erase

Maya couldn't move.

She stared at the photograph.

The little girl looked exactly like the child she had always seen in her recurring dreams.

A red swing.

A white dog.

A man lifting her into the air.

Dreams she had believed were nothing more than imagination.

Colonel Vance looked at her gently.

"Those weren't dreams."

"They were memories."

Victoria's confidence vanished.

"This proves nothing."

"Lots of children look alike."

Vance nodded.

"You're right."

"So let's finish this."

He signaled one of the military officers who had quietly entered the ballroom.

The officer carried a sealed titanium case.

Every eye followed it.

Inside was a worn military file protected by government seals.

Across the cover were the words:

CLASSIFIED – FAMILY PROTECTION PROGRAM

Vance opened it carefully.

Inside was a DNA profile.

Birth records.

Hospital documents.

Photographs.

Then the final page.

A handwritten order signed by the Minister of Defense himself.

"If the Vaughn family is attacked, the surviving child will be hidden under federal protection until the threat has been eliminated."

Victoria's lips trembled.

"No..."

Vance continued reading.

"The child was separated during an ambush on Highway 17."

"Presumed dead."

"But never found."

He slowly looked at Maya.

"They searched for you for twenty-four years."

Maya covered her mouth.

Tears streamed down her face.

"My parents..."

Vance swallowed.

"They died protecting evidence that exposed powerful men."

"They saved thousands of innocent lives."

"And they believed you escaped."

The ballroom had become completely silent.

Even Maya's husband looked frozen.

He realized the woman he had allowed his mother to humiliate...

Was the daughter of national heroes.
