Chapter 1: The Perfect Trap

Chapter 1: The Perfect Trap

The phone disappeared back into Evelyn Carter's pocket just seconds before the elderly caretaker looked down at her.

"Oh my God!" Mrs. Holloway gasped. "Someone call an ambulance!"

On the staircase above, Tiffany Langford buried her face in her hands, crying louder than ever.

"I didn't mean to push her that hard!" she sobbed. "She attacked me first! She threatened my baby!"

Mrs. Holloway instinctively wrapped an arm around Tiffany.

"It's okay, sweetheart. We'll explain everything."

Evelyn almost smiled.

Exactly as planned.

For six months, Tiffany and her wealthy friends had bullied her after discovering she was pregnant and working as Briar Manor's temporary archivist. They mocked her secondhand clothes, spread rumors that she had trapped a rich man for money, and constantly tried to provoke her into fighting back.

But Evelyn never reacted.

Because Detective Gabriel Ruiz had instructed her not to.

Three weeks earlier, anonymous financial records had landed on Ruiz's desk, revealing millions of dollars disappearing from the Langford Foundation through shell companies.

Every document somehow connected back to Briar Manor.

Ruiz believed someone inside the mansion was laundering money.

Evelyn had volunteered to help.

Not because she was brave.

Because her late father had been one of the accountants murdered after threatening to expose the scheme.

Today's confrontation wasn't an accident.

Hidden inside Evelyn's necklace was a miniature camera.

The hallway.

The staircase.

Every insult.

Every shove.

Everything had been recorded.

Sirens echoed outside.

Tiffany relaxed.

"Good," she whispered to herself.

"The police will arrest her."

Then nearly a dozen police cruisers surrounded the mansion.

Black SUVs followed behind them.

Detective Gabriel Ruiz stepped out first.

Behind him came agents from the Financial Crimes Division.

Then prosecutors.

Then television crews.

Ruiz didn't even glance at Tiffany.

He walked directly toward Evelyn.

"Mrs. Carter," he asked calmly, "are you and the baby alive?"

Evelyn nodded.

"Good."

Ruiz stood and faced everyone.

"This property is now an active federal crime scene."

The smiles vanished from every wealthy face in the room.
