Chapter 3 – The Neighbor Who Couldn't Stay Silent

The next morning, Lily finally opened her eyes.

She looked confused.

Then frightened.

Then she saw me.

"Mommy..."

I burst into tears.

Marcus held both of us while nurses quietly stepped outside.

After several minutes, Lily whispered something barely audible.

"Grandma was mad."

Marcus and I froze.

"What happened, sweetheart?"

Lily's tiny fingers trembled.

"Grandma said... I wasn't invited anymore."

Every word shattered another piece of my childhood.

Then Lily added something that changed the investigation forever.

"Aunt Vanessa carried me."

Detective Brooks requested a child forensic interviewer.

Unlike police questioning, the interview was designed so children could speak freely without suggestion.

Lily described everything using dolls.

Grandma yelled.

Vanessa picked her up.

The dumpster smelled bad.

She cried.

Someone closed the lid.

Then everything became dark.

The interview was recorded.

Every second.

Every word.

Meanwhile, a woman named Gloria Jenkins watched the evening news.

She lived directly behind the storage building.

When reporters mentioned a child found in a dumpster...

She nearly dropped her coffee.

Because she remembered seeing something the night before.

A woman in a white dress.

Dragging a large black trash bag.

She assumed it contained decorations.

Until now.

Gloria immediately called the police.

"I think I saw who left that child there."

Detectives visited Gloria that afternoon.

She handed them footage from her home security cameras.

The angle wasn't perfect.

Faces weren't visible.

But the timestamp matched Lily's disappearance.

A woman wearing the exact white designer suit Vanessa had worn at the engagement party walked behind the storage building.

She returned alone.

Three minutes later.

Without the bag.

Brooks smiled for the first time.

"It's not enough for conviction," he said.

"But it's enough for a warrant."

That evening...

Police cars returned to my parents' house.

This time...

They weren't asking questions.

They were serving search warrants.
