Chapter 2: Picking Up the Pieces

Chapter 2: Picking Up the Pieces
The following weeks felt strange.
The mansion was quieter.
Lighter.
As if the walls themselves could finally breathe.
Emma still struggled.
Every time she looked at the broken photograph, she remembered the humiliation in the nursery.
One evening, Daniel found her sitting by the fireplace.
The repaired picture frame rested in her lap.
The crack was still visible.
The image had been restored, but not perfectly.
Just like them.
Daniel sat beside her.
"I'm sorry."
Emma looked at him.
"For what?"
"For not seeing it sooner."
His voice broke slightly.
Emma reached for his hand.
"You see it now."
For a long moment neither spoke.
Their baby slept peacefully upstairs.
The same child who had unknowingly witnessed the worst day of his mother's life.
And the beginning of her freedom.
Months passed.
Emma slowly regained her confidence.
She returned to her charity work.
Daniel spent less time at the office and more time at home.
For the first time since their marriage, they felt like a family instead of survivors.
Then one afternoon, an unexpected letter arrived.
The handwriting was familiar.
Margaret.
Emma stared at the envelope for several minutes before opening it.
Inside was a single page.
No excuses.
No demands.
Only one sentence.
"I became the thing I once hated, and I am sorry."
Emma folded the letter carefully.
