CHAPTER FOUR

The Heart That Refused to Forget

Amelia felt as though someone had ripped the air from her lungs.

"No."

She shook her head.

"No, you remember."

Ethan remained perfectly composed.

"I'm afraid I don't."

She reached into her purse with shaking hands.

"I kept everything."

She pulled out a faded photograph.

It showed the two of them outside the children's hospital.

Laughing.

His arm around her.

She held it toward him.

"You took this."

Ethan accepted the photograph.

For the first time that evening...

Something changed.

His fingers froze.

A sharp pain flashed across his face.

Fragments.

A little girl laughing.

A hospital hallway.

Pink flowers.

Someone singing softly.

Then...

Darkness.

A violent headache exploded behind his eyes.

He stumbled backward.

"Ethan!"

Vivian caught his arm.

Cassandra's expression changed for only a fraction of a second.

Fear.

Real fear.

Then it disappeared.

"Ethan, you're exhausted."

"I'm..."

He pressed a hand against his temple.

"I know this place."

His breathing became uneven.

"I've been here."

Cassandra immediately interrupted.

"Of course you have."

"No."

He looked at Amelia again.

"I know... her."

His voice became uncertain.

"I just..."

May you like

The pain intensified.

"...can't remember why."
