CHAPTER 3 — Their Perfect Reputation Begins to Collapse

CHAPTER 3 — Their Perfect Reputation Begins to Collapse

The next morning, my face was still swollen.

But my mind had never been clearer.

For years, I'd heard Eleanor boast about one thing above all else.

"Our family has a reputation."

She treated that reputation like it was priceless.

The problem?

Reputations built on lies collapse quickly.

The police detective assigned to my case requested interviews with everyone who had been present.

Preston.

Eleanor.

Richard.

Morgan.

Their stories didn't match.

Eleanor claimed Preston had "barely touched" me.

Morgan insisted she'd never actually seen the slap.

Richard admitted he'd been looking at his plate.

Unfortunately for them...

My Tesla's dash camera had continued recording after I parked.

While it hadn't captured the slap itself, it clearly recorded the shouting that followed after I walked outside.

Most importantly...

It captured Eleanor yelling,

"A husband has to correct his wife sometimes!"

The detective replayed that sentence three times.

Meanwhile, Daniel uncovered another problem.

During wedding planning, Preston had convinced me to add him as an authorized user on my premium credit card.

He'd already charged nearly twelve thousand dollars.

Designer suits.

Golf memberships.

Luxury electronics.

All within weeks of the wedding.

I removed him immediately.

Every pending purchase was disputed.

Several luxury orders were canceled before delivery.

Apparently, Preston had been planning an entirely new wardrobe...

Funded by me.

Then came the phone call Eleanor never expected.

The Langham Hotel contacted me.

A decorative crystal sculpture had disappeared after the reception.

Security footage showed Morgan placing it inside a gift bag before leaving.

The hotel had planned to contact both families.

Instead, I simply forwarded the footage to Daniel.

He smiled.

"Interesting family values."

By Friday afternoon, whispers had begun circulating through their church.

Not because I started rumors.

Because police officers had visited Eleanor's house twice.

Neighbors noticed.

Questions spread naturally.

Eleanor called fifteen times.

I answered only once.

"You're destroying this family."

"No," I replied.

"The truth is."

Then I hung up.

That evening, Preston finally sent the message I'd been waiting for.

Can we please meet and talk?

No lawyers.

No parents.

Just us.

May you like

I agreed.

But not for the reason he thought.
