Chapter 13: The Last Confession

Chapter 13: The Last Confession
The sealed envelope sat in the center of the old wooden table.
No one touched it.
For twenty-three years, it had waited beneath the roots of an ancient oak tree, hidden from the world.
Now, after a failed assassination, a corporate takeover attempt, and the return of a man believed dead, it had finally been discovered.
Daniel stared at the handwriting.

He knew it immediately.
His father's.
"Open it," Marcus said quietly.
Daniel hesitated.
For the first time since the investigation began, he looked afraid.
"What if this changes everything?"
Thomas Ellis looked at him.
"Daniel, everything already changed the moment they tried to kill you."
Slowly, Daniel broke the seal.
Inside was a single letter.
The paper was yellowed with age, but the handwriting remained clear.
He began reading.
My son Daniel,
If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.
Daniel stopped.
His throat tightened.
He continued.
For years, I believed I could defeat them from inside their own organization. I was wrong. The Black Crest Society is not a business group. It is a machine built on fear, manipulation, and control.
Marcus listened carefully.
They do not destroy their enemies publicly. They erase them quietly. They remove reputations, identities, and eventually lives.
Daniel lowered the letter slightly.
Thomas closed his eyes.
He had known this truth for decades.
Daniel continued.
The person closest to me betrayed me. Someone I trusted completely helped them enter my company and my home.
Everyone became still.
Richard looked uncomfortable.
Anna glanced toward him.
Daniel kept reading.
I discovered the betrayal too late. By the time I understood what was happening, my own employees had already been replaced, my records had been altered, and my family was in danger.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
The person leading Black Crest's operation against our family is not an outsider.
It is someone who carries our name.
Daniel stopped reading.
The room went silent.
"Someone in my family?"
Marcus asked.
Daniel slowly nodded.
He continued.
Daniel, you must not trust appearances. The person who smiles beside you may be the same person holding the knife behind your back.
The letter ended with one final warning.
Find Thomas Ellis. He is the only person who knows the truth.
Everyone looked at Thomas.
Daniel's voice was quiet.
"My father knew you survived."
Thomas nodded.
"He helped me disappear."
Marcus frowned.
"Why didn't you reveal yourself?"
Thomas looked away.
"Because the person who betrayed William Harrington was someone powerful enough to destroy both of us."
Rebecca quickly searched old family records.
"Daniel, who in your family had access to the company during that period?"
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
His eyes remained fixed on the letter.
Then he whispered:
"My uncle."
Everyone looked at him.
"Edward Harrington."
Thomas nodded slowly.
"He was the one who introduced William to Black Crest."
Daniel looked shocked.
"My father's younger brother?"
"Yes."
Thomas's voice became heavier.
"He convinced William it was a powerful business alliance."
"But when William tried to leave..."
"Edward chose Black Crest over his own brother."
Suddenly Rebecca's laptop alerted.
Everyone turned.
"What happened?"
She checked the screen.
"The asset transfers."
"Did they stop?"
"No."
Her expression changed.
"They accelerated."
Daniel frowned.
"How?"
"They found another authorization channel."
Marcus stepped closer.
"From where?"
Rebecca rotated the laptop.
A location appeared.
Harrington Private Foundation Headquarters.
Daniel froze.
"That's impossible."
"Why?"
"Because only one person has access."
Marcus looked at him.
"Who?"
Daniel slowly answered.
"My wife."
The room went silent.
Back at the Harrington estate, Evelyn stood alone in the private study.
She looked completely different from the woman who had screamed at Anna the night before.
No anger.
No arrogance.
Only exhaustion.
Her phone rang.
She answered immediately.
"You promised me he would be gone."
A cold voice replied.
"You promised us access."
Evelyn looked toward the portrait of her and Daniel hanging above the fireplace.
"I didn't know you were going to kill him."
The voice on the other end laughed softly.
"Everyone says that after the plan fails."
Evelyn's face changed.
"You told me Daniel would simply lose control of the company."
"And now he will."
A pause.
"Unless you want the world to know what you did."
Evelyn gripped the phone.
"You can't threaten me."
The voice became colder.
"We already did."
The call ended.
Evelyn slowly lowered the phone.
She wasn't the mastermind.
But she wasn't innocent either.
Minutes later, Marcus and Daniel arrived at the foundation headquarters with FBI agents.
The security system had been disabled.
The office was empty.
Except for one person.
Evelyn.
She sat behind the desk.
Waiting.
Daniel stared at her.
"Evelyn."
She looked up.
For the first time in their marriage, she had no excuse.
"You think I tried to kill you."
Daniel didn't answer.
Evelyn looked down.
"I never wanted you dead."
Marcus stepped forward.
"Then explain why your credentials authorized the transfers."
Tears filled her eyes.
"Because they forced me."
"Who?"
Evelyn looked toward Daniel.
And whispered the name everyone had been avoiding.
"Edward."
The room went silent.
"My brother-in-law."
Daniel stepped back.
"Evelyn..."
She shook her head.
"I was trapped."
"They threatened my family."
"They promised they would leave us alone if I helped them move the money."
Marcus watched carefully.
"Why didn't you tell Daniel?"
Evelyn looked at her husband.
"Because I knew what would happen."
"What?"
"They would kill him."
Before anyone could respond, every screen inside the office suddenly turned black.
A serpent symbol appeared.
Then a message.
YOU FOUND THE TRUTH.
NOW WATCH IT DISAPPEAR.
The building's lights shut off.
The security system went offline.
And from somewhere inside the darkened hallway...
A slow clap echoed.
Someone was inside.
Someone who had been watching them the entire time.
Marcus raised his weapon.
"Show yourself."
A voice answered from the darkness.
"You've spent days looking for a ghost."
A figure stepped forward.
Older.
Confident.
Unhurried.
Daniel's face turned pale.
Because he knew that voice.
May you like
It belonged to the man he thought had been dead for twenty years.
Edward Harrington.
