Chapter 13 - Burn the Name.

Nathan's mother, Margaret Cole, lived in Charleston and had not attended a Cole Meridian board meeting in seven years.

After Charles died, she sold her Manhattan apartment, resigned from every family foundation committee, and told Nathan she wanted nothing more to do with the machinery of the company.

Nathan had respected that choice.

Now he wondered whether it had been grief or escape.

He called her at 8:03 p.m.

She answered warmly.

"Nathan, darling."

He did not return the greeting.

"Did you know Grace was pregnant?"

Silence.

Nathan closed his eyes.

The silence answered before she did.

"Yes."

His knees weakened.

He sat down.

Grace stood across the room holding Lily's pajamas.

She understood from his face.

"When?" Nathan asked.

"Before Grace left."

"How?"

"Your father told me."

"And you let him send her away."

Margaret began crying.

"Nathan, I begged him not to."

"Did you call me?"

"No."

"Did you call Grace?"

"No."

"Then you did not stop him."

Margaret's breathing shook through the phone.

"I was afraid of him too."

Nathan looked at Grace.

That sentence belonged to too many people in his life.

"You had money. Lawyers. Friends. A home."

"And I had spent thirty years learning that Charles always won."

Nathan's anger did not disappear, but its shape changed.

"Did you know Lily was born?"

"Yes."

"Did you see her?"

"Once."

Grace's head snapped up.

Nathan stared at the phone.

"What?"

Margaret confessed that she had followed Grace to a pediatric clinic when Lily was seven months old.

She watched from across the street.

She never approached.

"Why?"

"I wanted to know she was real."

Nathan laughed bitterly.

"Everyone wanted to look at her from cars. Did anyone consider speaking to her mother?"

Margaret cried harder.

"I am sorry."

Nathan looked at Grace.

"She is here."

Margaret went silent.

Grace shook her head once.

Nathan respected it.

"Grace does not want to speak to you."

"I understand."

"Do you?"

"Probably not enough."

Margaret told Nathan something else.

Charles had given her a copy of his video statement and instructed her to release it if Richard ever took control of Cole Meridian after Charles's death.

She had kept it in a safe-deposit box.

"Why didn't you release it when Richard became interim chairman?"

"Because he called me first."

Nathan's blood chilled.

"What did he say?"

"He said if I released anything, he would make sure the public believed I had helped Charles hide an illegitimate child for financial reasons."

"You did help by staying silent."

Margaret whispered, "I know."

Nathan heard genuine shame.

He was not ready to convert it into forgiveness.

"Send the video to Agent Shah tonight."

"I will."

"Not to me. Not to the company. To her."

"All right."

"And Mom?"

"Yes?"

"If you destroy it or warn Richard, I will tell the truth without you."

Margaret's answer was quiet.

"You should."

The video arrived ninety minutes later.

Federal investigators authenticated the file through metadata and the duplicate copy found at Halcyon.

Charles appeared thin and exhausted on screen.

He sat in his study wearing a gray sweater Nathan remembered from the final months of his life.

He spoke for thirty-two minutes.

He admitted the coercion of Grace.

He admitted manipulating Nathan's relationship with Victoria.

He admitted building political and corporate influence networks that Richard later expanded.

Then he addressed the trust.

"Lily Alvarez is my granddaughter," Charles said into the camera.

Nathan stopped breathing.

It was the first time he had heard his father say her name.

"Her existence is not a defect in a contract."

Charles paused, struggling for breath.

"The defect was believing a family could be managed like a balance sheet."

Grace watched from beside Nathan.

She did not cry.

Charles said Richard had threatened to expose decades of questionable corporate arrangements if Charles changed the succession plan.

Some arrangements were legal but ugly.

Others might trigger regulatory investigations.

Charles had hesitated because he feared the company would collapse.

Then he said the sentence that gave Chapter 13 its direction.

"If preserving the Cole name requires another generation to live under this lie, burn the name."

Nathan replayed the words.

Claire looked at him.

"Dad just gave you permission to destroy his legacy."

Nathan shook his head.

"I don't need his permission."

The annual shareholder meeting was scheduled for the next morning.

Richard still controlled enough proxies to influence the board even while under investigation.

His team planned to argue that the scandal was a personal matter and that Cole Meridian should settle privately with regulators to preserve value.

Nathan decided the opposite.

He requested ten minutes of shareholder speaking time as a director and major shareholder.

The board offered three.

Nathan accepted.

Claire thought three minutes was absurd.

Nathan said it was enough.

The meeting took place in a hotel ballroom because protesters and reporters surrounded corporate headquarters.

Grace refused to attend in person.

"This is your company fight."

Nathan corrected her.

"It used to be."

She watched remotely with Lily from Claire's home.

At 10:14 a.m., Nathan walked onto the stage.

Richard sat in the front row with attorneys on both sides.

He had not yet been charged.

He looked composed enough to suggest nothing could reach him.

Nathan placed a single sheet of paper on the podium.

"My name is Nathan Cole."

The room quieted.

"For most of my life, I believed that name was an inheritance."

He looked directly at the cameras.

"This week I learned it was also used as a threat."

Murmurs moved through the room.

Nathan described no graphic details.

He did not expose Grace's private history beyond what she authorized.

He said his father and senior business partners had concealed the existence of his daughter to manipulate trust control.

He said false evidence had been created against her mother.

He said corporate resources had been used for private coercion.

Then he made the decision Richard never expected.

"Effective today, I am waiving every special voting privilege attached personally to my family name that can legally be waived."

The room erupted.

Richard stood.

Nathan continued.

"I am also placing my direct Cole Meridian shares into an independent voting arrangement until federal and shareholder investigations are complete."

Reporters shouted questions.

Nathan raised his voice only slightly.

"No child should ever become a target because adults want control of a company."

He looked at Richard.

"If this empire can survive only through silence, it should not survive in its current form."

Richard's face finally changed.

Nathan finished with Charles's line, but he altered it.

"My father told me to burn the name if the lie required another generation."

Nathan folded the paper.

"I am keeping the family. The name can defend itself."

He stepped away from the podium.

The meeting dissolved into chaos.

Cole Meridian shares fell another nine percent, then recovered part of the loss after independent directors announced a restructuring committee and permanent separation from Ashford Strategic.

Nathan's personal net worth dropped hundreds of millions on paper before lunch.

He felt strangely light.

Grace called him.

"Lily wants to tell you something."

Lily came on the line.

"I saw you on TV."

"I heard."

"You looked mad."

"I was trying not to."

"Mommy cried."

Nathan heard Grace protest in the background.

Lily continued.

"Are you coming home?"

Nathan's throat tightened at the word home.

"Yes."

"Bring strawberries."

"I can do that."

He ended the call smiling for the first time that morning.

Agent Shah approached before he reached the exit.

"Richard's moving."

Nathan's smile disappeared.

"Where?"

"His attorneys requested a meeting with prosecutors."

"A surrender?"

"A deal."

"For himself?"

"Maybe."

Priya handed Nathan a copy of the proposal summary.

Richard offered full cooperation on Northstar, Detective Harrow, offshore records, and corporate misconduct.

In exchange, he wanted reduced charges and one extraordinary condition.

Nathan read it twice.

"He wants immunity for Victoria."

Priya nodded.

Nathan looked back toward the ballroom.

Richard had built an empire around control.

Now, with the walls closing in, his first public bargain was for his daughter.

Then Priya pointed to the second page.

"That's not the part you need to worry about."

Nathan read the final condition.

May you like

Richard would cooperate only if Grace Alvarez signed a civil release stating that Charles Cole, not Richard Ashford, had been solely responsible for forcing her disappearance five years earlier.

In other words, Richard wanted one final lie.
