Chapter 8 - The Theft They Invented.

.The first police officers arrived twenty-three minutes after Gavin ended the party.

By then, half the guests had been allowed to leave after giving their names to building security.

The others remained because they had either witnessed the confrontation, had access to restricted areas, or were directly connected to Priscilla, Caleb, or Senator Ashford.

What had begun as a celebration now looked like the aftermath of a corporate raid.

Champagne warmed untouched in crystal glasses.

The cake remained uncut.

White orchids leaned over tables where uniformed officers took notes.

Taylor had fallen asleep on Nora's shoulder.

Her cheek rested against the collar of her mother's uniform while Nora answered questions in a low voice.

Gavin watched from across the room.

He had offered Nora a guest bedroom where Taylor could sleep.

Nora had declined.

"I don't want her out of my sight," she had said.

After the threatening messages, Gavin understood.

Marcus approached him with a detective named Lena Brooks.

Brooks was in her forties, with tired eyes and the kind of calm voice that made everyone else sound more dramatic by comparison.

"Mr. Roberson, we need to separate allegations from evidence."

"Agreed."

"Your security team has preserved video and access logs."

"Yes."

"The alleged forged documents will need forensic examination."

"Understood."

"And the missing money?"

"My family office can provide original account records tonight."

Brooks nodded.

"Good."

Then her gaze moved toward Nora.

"There's another problem."

Gavin's stomach tightened.

"What?"

Marcus answered.

"Building security found jewelry in Nora's staff locker."

For one second, Gavin did not understand the sentence.

"What jewelry?"

Priscilla appeared behind them.

"My bracelet."

Her voice was quiet.

Gavin turned.

She held one bare wrist with the opposite hand.

"The diamond bracelet my grandmother gave me."

"It disappeared last month."

Nora looked up from across the room.

She had heard.

"No."

Her face emptied.

"No, no, no."

Taylor stirred against her.

Nora stood too quickly.

"I never touched her bracelet."

Detective Brooks raised a hand.

"Ms. Bell, nobody is arresting you."

"But you found it in my locker."

"Yes."

"Then someone put it there."

Priscilla's lips pressed together.

"Nora, I don't want to believe you took it."

The sentence was perfectly constructed.

Sympathetic enough for witnesses.

Accusing enough to wound.

Nora stared at her.

"You already believe it."

"I said I don't want to."

Gavin stepped between them.

"When was the locker last accessed?"

Marcus held up his tablet.

"That's the problem."

"The staff locker corridor has one camera."

"It stopped recording for eleven minutes at 7:42 p.m."

Gavin laughed bitterly.

"Another coincidence."

Priscilla's eyes flashed.

"You cannot possibly think I disabled a camera to plant my own bracelet."

"I didn't say your name."

"You didn't have to."

Detective Brooks looked from one to the other.

"Everyone needs to stop helping me by arguing."

The room quieted.

She turned to Nora.

"Ms. Bell, who has access to your locker?"

"Only me."

"Is it keyed or coded?"

"Keyed."

"Where is the key?"

Nora reached into her apron pocket.

Her fingers searched.

Then searched again.

Her eyes widened.

"It's gone."

Priscilla closed her eyes as if pained.

"Nora."

Nora looked at her with open fury now.

"Do not say my name like that."

Taylor woke fully.

"Mommy?"

Nora immediately softened.

"I'm okay, baby."

"Are we going home?"

Nora looked around at the officers, the billionaires, the senator, and the woman whose bracelet had appeared inside her locker.

"Soon."

Taylor rubbed one eye.

Then she pointed toward the far side of the room.

"That lady had Mommy's key."

Every adult near her went still.

Nora frowned.

"What lady?"

Taylor pointed again.

A young woman stood near the service entrance wearing a pale blue cocktail dress.

Gavin recognized her as Simone Vale, Priscilla's personal assistant.

Simone's face turned white.

Priscilla spun around.

"Taylor, don't make things up."

The child's expression hardened.

"I don't."

Nora crouched.

"When did you see Simone with my key?"

Taylor thought.

"When you were carrying the shiny cups."

"She took it from your pocket."

Simone shook her head immediately.

"That is not true."

Taylor looked at her.

"You dropped the blue paper too."

Simone's breathing changed.

Detective Brooks noticed.

"What blue paper?"

Taylor pointed toward the service hallway.

"I put it by the plant."

Nora stared at her daughter.

"You picked it up?"

Taylor nodded.

"It had a flower on it."

Priscilla's face went still.

The engagement invitations carried a blue embossed card with a silver orchid crest.

But so did Priscilla's private stationery.

Detective Brooks motioned to an officer.

"Show us."

Taylor slid down from Nora's arms.

Nora immediately took her hand.

Together they walked toward the service hallway.

The others followed at a distance.

Taylor stopped beside a tall ceramic planter.

She reached behind it.

Nothing.

Her face fell.

"It was here."

Simone exhaled.

Priscilla folded her arms.

"She's three."

"She probably moved it somewhere else."

Taylor frowned.

"No."

Detective Brooks crouched near the planter.

She used a gloved hand to inspect the narrow space between the ceramic base and the wall.

Then she reached deeper.

A folded piece of pale blue paper emerged.

Simone whispered something under her breath.

Brooks unfolded it.

The silver orchid crest was visible at the top.

Below it was a handwritten note.

Nora could not see the words.

Gavin could.

Locker 14.

Bracelet in velvet pouch.

Key is usually in right apron pocket.

Do it before 8.

Gavin looked at Simone.

She began crying before anyone accused her.

Priscilla stepped backward.

"I didn't write that."

Detective Brooks looked up.

"Nobody said you did."

It was the second time that night Priscilla had defended herself before being named.

Simone shook her head rapidly.

"I didn't want to."

Priscilla stared at her.

"Simone."

"Don't."

Simone's voice broke.

"Don't look at me like that."

Priscilla's face became ice.

Detective Brooks stood.

"Ms. Vale, who gave you the note?"

Simone looked at Caleb.

Caleb's entire body stiffened.

"No."

He stepped forward.

"She is lying."

Simone backed away from him.

"You said Nora had seen too much."

"You said if the bracelet was found in her locker, no one would believe anything she said about the hotel."

Nora covered her mouth.

Gavin looked at Caleb with a fury so controlled it frightened even him.

"You tried to frame her."

Caleb shook his head.

"She is panicking."

Simone reached into her purse.

Marcus moved instantly.

"Hands where I can see them."

Simone froze.

"It's my phone."

Detective Brooks took it.

Simone unlocked the screen with trembling fingers.

"He texted me from a second number."

"He told me where Nora's key would be."

Caleb looked toward the elevator.

Two officers shifted to block it.

Priscilla stared at him.

"Caleb, tell me you didn't do this."

He looked at her.

Something passed between them.

Not affection.

Not surprise.

A warning.

Gavin saw it.

Then Simone spoke again.

"The bracelet wasn't the only thing."

Priscilla's eyes snapped toward her.

"Stop talking."

The command came out before she could soften it.

Detective Brooks turned.

"What else?"

Simone began to shake.

"There's a room downstairs."

Gavin stared at her.

"What room?"

"Storage level B3."

"Mr. Voss rented it under another name."

"He kept documents there."

Caleb swore under his breath.

Simone looked at Gavin.

"And a machine for copying keys."

Evelyn's hand went to her mouth.

Gavin thought of the brass office key.

He thought of the safe-deposit box.

Then Simone said the sentence that sent Marcus moving toward the elevator before she had even finished.

"Nora looked at the note Detective Brooks had recovered and felt anger replace fear.

The handwriting described her routine with clinical familiarity.

Right apron pocket.

Locker 14.

Before 8.

Someone had watched her closely enough to know where she kept a key she barely thought about herself.

"How long have they been watching me?" she asked.

No one answered.

Taylor squeezed her hand.

Nora looked down and forced her face to soften.

"You did the right thing telling us about the paper."

Taylor nodded seriously.

"Blue paper was sneaky."

Detective Brooks almost smiled.

"That's one way to describe it."

Priscilla did not smile.

She stared at Simone with cold disbelief.

"You were supposed to manage guest arrivals."

Simone wiped her face.

"You told me to do whatever Caleb asked if there was a problem with staff."

Priscilla froze.

"That is not what I said."

"You said he was handling security problems tonight."

"You said not to bother Gavin."

Gavin turned toward Priscilla.

She shook her head.

"I meant normal event problems."

The distinction might have mattered if there had not already been a forged signature, disabled communications, and a planted bracelet.

Detective Brooks wrote down the exchange word for word.

Nora watched her do it and understood something important.

For the first time that night, what powerful people said about her was not automatically becoming the official version.

Someone was recording the facts.

May you like

Then Simone revealed the storage room on B3.

Dean Mercer was down there tonight."
