Chapter 1: The Lie Behind the Locked Door

Chapter 1: The Lie Behind the Locked Door

"My God," Nathan whispered.

"Who could have done this?"

Dominic didn't answer.

He never took his eyes off Mia.

The bruises on her wrists told a story no one could fake.

The rope burns were fresh.

The dried blood beneath her fingernails proved she had fought until she had no strength left.

Harper refused to let go of her mother.

She buried her tiny face against Mia's shoulder and sobbed until her little body shook.

"I'm sorry, Mommy."

"I couldn't find you."

"I tried."

Mia kissed the top of Harper's head.

"You were so brave."

"You did exactly what I wanted you to do."

Dominic carefully helped Mia sit upright.

She winced the moment her back touched the wine rack.

Someone had beaten her.

Not enough to leave obvious broken bones.

Just enough to keep her obedient.

That made Dominic's jaw tighten.

It wasn't rage anymore.

It was calculation.

Someone inside his own house had planned this.

Someone who knew his schedule.

Someone who knew exactly when he would be gone.

Daniel stepped closer.

"Boss."

"We should call an ambulance."

Dominic shook his head.

"No sirens."

"No police."

"They ask questions."

"They slow everything down."

Marcus immediately understood.

"I'll bring Dr. Ellis."

"Our doctor?"

"Our doctor."

Marcus disappeared upstairs.

Dominic turned back toward Mia.

"Mia."

She looked at him through exhausted eyes.

"I need you to stay awake."

She nodded weakly.

"I'll try."

"Who did this?"

For several seconds she remained silent.

Her lips trembled.

Then she glanced toward the doorway.

Toward Nathan.

Dominic noticed.

Nathan noticed too.

Nathan forced a confused smile.

"Mia."

"It's me."

"Nathan."

"You're safe now."

Mia immediately looked away.

That tiny movement lasted less than a second.

But Dominic saw everything.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not confusion.

Not trauma.

Fear.

Nathan folded his arms.

"She's dehydrated."

"She probably doesn't even know where she is."

Dominic slowly stood.

He faced Nathan.

"You said she went to Pennsylvania."

"That's what Claire told me."

"You believed her?"

Nathan shrugged.

"Why wouldn't I?"

Dominic stared into his oldest friend's eyes.

For seventeen years Nathan had never struggled to answer a question.

Today every word sounded rehearsed.

Harper suddenly lifted her head.

"No."

Everyone looked at the little girl.

Nathan smiled again.

"What is it, sweetheart?"

Harper pointed directly at him.

"You lied."

The hallway became silent.

Nathan laughed softly.

"I think you've got me mixed up."

"You came downstairs."

"You told Mommy to stop crying."

Nathan's smile disappeared.

Harper kept talking.

"I heard you."

"You said Mr. Vale would never believe a maid."

Mia closed her eyes.

Tears rolled silently down her face.

Dominic's pulse slowed.

That always happened before violence.

His men knew the sign.

Daniel quietly moved closer to Nathan.

Marcus returned with a medical bag before stopping halfway across the room.

He instantly sensed the tension.

"What happened?"

Nobody answered.

Dominic stepped toward Nathan.

One step.

Then another.

The distance between them disappeared.

Nathan didn't move.

"Tell me she's mistaken."

Nathan sighed.

"She's four years old."

"Children imagine things."

Dominic nodded once.

Then he looked at Harper.

"What else did you hear?"

Harper sniffled.

"A lady was yelling."

"Miss Claire."

Mia's breathing became uneven.

Harper continued.

"Miss Claire said if Mommy talked..."

"...the wedding would be ruined."

Dominic's eyes darkened.

"The wedding?"

Harper nodded.

"And Mr. Nathan said..."

She hesitated.

Dominic crouched beside her.

"It's okay."

"You can tell me."

Harper whispered.

"He said..."

"...after the wedding..."

"...Mommy wouldn't be a problem anymore."

Silence crushed the cellar.

Daniel instinctively reached for his pistol.

Marcus slowly zipped the medical bag shut.

No one looked away from Nathan.

Nathan chuckled once.

A forced sound.

"This is insane."

"A frightened child."

"A traumatized maid."

"And suddenly I'm the villain?"

Dominic didn't blink.

"You've been my brother."

Nathan nodded.

"I still am."

"Then explain the lock."

Nathan opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Dominic noticed it immediately.

The hesitation.

The missing answer.

The crack in seventeen years of absolute trust.

At that exact moment, a woman's high heels echoed across the marble floor upstairs.

Click.

Click.

Click.

Claire Bennett.

She called from the hallway.

"Dominic?"

"You're home!"

Her cheerful voice floated down the staircase.

Then it stopped.

Because she saw the broken lock.

A heartbeat later, her footsteps began running toward the cellar.

Fast.

May you like

Too fast.

As if she already knew exactly what had been hidden behind that door.
