Chapter 2 – The Truth He Buried

Chapter 2 – The Truth He Buried
The biopsy results arrived the next afternoon.
The surgeon smiled before speaking.
"The mass is benign."
Anna burst into tears.
Not graceful tears.
Not quiet ones.
Months of fear poured out all at once.
Luca caught her before she slipped off the bed.
He held her while she cried against his chest.
For several minutes neither of them cared who was watching.
When the doctor left, Anna finally looked up.
"Why couldn't you ever love me like this before?"
Luca closed his eyes.
"I did."
"No."
"You loved protecting me."
"You loved keeping me."
"But you never let me know you."
The words struck harder than any bullet ever had.
He sat beside the window for a long time before speaking.
"When I was eleven..."
Anna looked over.
"My father made me watch them kill my mother."
Her breathing stopped.
"He said feelings make men weak."
Luca stared out at the gray Brooklyn skyline.
"I cried."
"He hit me until I stopped."
"After that..."
"I promised myself no one would ever see me vulnerable again."
Anna slowly reached for his hand.
"You kept that promise."
His voice cracked.
"And I almost lost the only person worth breaking it for."
For the first time since childhood...
Luca Marino cried.

Not because he was afraid.
Because he was finally safe enough not to hide.
