Chapter 2: The Truth He Never Spoke

Chapter 2: The Truth He Never Spoke

The surgery was scheduled for the following morning.

Neither of them slept.

Luca remained beside Anna's bed all night, refusing food, refusing coffee, refusing to leave even when nurses insisted visiting hours had ended.

No one argued with him twice.

Just before dawn, Anna watched him staring out the window.

"You should rest."

"I can't."

"You've been awake for almost thirty hours."

"So have you."

She smiled faintly.

"Different reasons."

He turned toward her.

"No."

His voice was barely audible.

"The same reason."

She waited.

For years she had begged him to talk.

This time...

He began on his own.

"When I was twelve, my father was murdered."

Anna stayed silent.

"I found him."

Luca's eyes never left the skyline outside.

"I thought if I'd gotten home five minutes earlier..."

His voice disappeared.

"...maybe he'd still be alive."

He swallowed hard.

"My mother blamed herself every day until she died."

Anna slowly sat up despite the pain.

"I promised myself I'd never love anyone enough to lose them like that."

She understood.

Not completely.

But enough.

"So instead," she whispered, "you built walls."

"I built a fortress."

"And locked yourself inside."

He nodded once.

"I thought protecting you meant giving you everything except the part of me that could be destroyed."

Anna's eyes filled with tears.

"I never wanted your money."

"I know."

"I wanted your fears."

"I know."

"I wanted your truth."

"I know."

He closed the distance between them.

"I'm sorry it took losing you to understand."

She gently rested her forehead against his.

"And I'm sorry I left without telling you how lonely I was."

Neither apology erased the past.

But together...

They made room for a future.

The surgery lasted nearly four hours.

Luca never moved from the waiting room.

His phone rang more than eighty times.

Business partners.

Lawyers.

Captains.

Politicians.

Every call went unanswered.

The only thing that mattered lay beyond the operating room doors.

Finally, the surgeon emerged.

"The procedure went well."

Luca stood so quickly the chair toppled behind him.

"We removed the entire mass."

He struggled to breathe.

"Is she..."

"She's alive."

Only then did Luca realize tears were running down his face.

He didn't wipe them away.

May you like

For the first time since childhood...

He let them fall.
