In the middle of the pouring rain, Garrett looked Coraline straight in the eye.
“She is not illegitimate.”
The entire street seemed to freeze.
Coraline let out a sharp laugh, but it vanished the moment Garrett stepped in front of Mave and Posie, shielding them like a wall.
Mave gently pulled Posie closer.
“We don't belong here.”
Garrett kept his distance, but he refused to let her walk away.
“I deserve the truth.”
Mave met his gray eyes.
“You deserved it three years ago.”
Three years earlier...
Mave was two months pregnant when Eleanor Hail summoned her to the family estate.
Without emotion, Eleanor placed a thick envelope containing five million dollars on the table.
“Leave my son.”
Mave refused.
Eleanor simply smiled.
Three hours later, Mave's father was arrested by the FBI for a money-laundering case he had absolutely nothing to do with.
Her younger brother was beaten so badly he was hospitalized.
Her mother's house went up in flames that same night.
Then Eleanor whispered the words Mave would never forget.
“If you stay, your family dies... one by one.”
Mave disappeared before sunrise.
She left no message.
No goodbye.
Because Eleanor had taken her phone and placed people around her every waking moment.
Garrett never knew.
Back in the present...
He slowly turned toward Wesley.
“Did you know?”
Wesley lowered his head.
“I suspected... but your mother ordered everyone to remain silent.”
Garrett clenched his fists.

He had hated the only woman who had ever truly loved him.
While his own mother had destroyed her life.
