Chapter 3 — Kindness Has Witnesses

Ten minutes later, three executives from the boutique's parent company rushed through the front entrance.

Their expensive shoes echoed across the marble floor.

None of them greeted the manager.

Instead, they walked directly toward Jonathan.

"Mr. Ashford... we came as quickly as possible."

Jonathan didn't answer immediately.

He remained crouched beside Mia, patiently waiting until she nodded to show she felt safe enough for him to stand.

Only then did he face the executives.

"I have one question."

He pointed toward Karen.

"Why is the only employee who showed compassion being escorted out of this store?"

No one answered.

One executive quietly requested the security footage.

Within minutes, the video played across a tablet.

There it was.

Karen dimming the lights.

Karen speaking softly.

Karen shielding Mia with the gray sweater.

Karen never raising her voice.

Then the manager shouting at her in front of customers.

The executive closed the tablet.

His face had turned pale.

"This is unacceptable."

The manager finally broke.

"I was protecting the brand!"

Jonathan shook his head.

"No."

"You protected appearances."

"She protected a child."

He looked at Karen.

"My daughter will remember who made her feel safe."

Then he turned back toward the executives.

"So will I."

The manager's employment ended before she left the building.

Karen, however, still believed the day was over.

She had no idea Jonathan Ashford had another decision to make.
