Chapter 1: The Girl with the Rolex

Chapter 1: The Girl with the Rolex

Silence swept through the grand lobby.

The security guards stopped mid-step.

The pianist slowly lowered his hands from the keys.

Every guest watched as billionaire Ethan Calloway held the little girl's tiny wrist with hands that suddenly seemed too weak to belong to the powerful businessman they all knew.

The watch wasn't fake.

It was a vintage Rolex Daytona, one of only a handful ever customized with a tiny engraving inside the clasp.

His heartbeat thundered in his ears.

He carefully opened the bracelet.

There it was.

For My Lily. Forever. — Ethan

His knees nearly gave out.

No one in the world knew about that engraving except him and his wife.

The little girl looked up, frightened.

"I'm sorry, sir," she whispered. "I didn't steal it."

Ethan blinked back tears.

"Where... where did you get this watch?"

The child hesitated.

"My mama gave it to me."

The answer hit him harder than any business loss, any betrayal, any tragedy he'd ever survived.

"What's your name?"

"Emma."

"And your mother's name?"

"Lily."

The room spun.

His wife.

The woman declared dead seven years ago.

The woman whose body had never been found.

Ethan knelt so they were eye level.

"Emma..."

The little girl instinctively stepped backward.

"You don't have to be afraid," he said softly.

She shook her head.

"Rich people always yell at me."

Those words shattered everyone in the lobby.

Especially Ethan.

He noticed the recycling bag still hanging from her shoulder.

Hundreds of empty soda cans.

Tiny hands had collected them one by one just to earn enough money for food.

"When did you last eat?" he asked.

Emma looked embarrassed.

"Yesterday morning."

Without saying another word, Ethan removed his suit jacket and gently wrapped it around her shoulders.

He turned toward the restaurant manager.

"Close the dining room."

The manager looked confused.

"But, sir, our VIP banquet—"

"I said close it."

Within minutes, chefs prepared the finest meal the hotel had ever served.

Emma stared at the table covered with warm bread, soup, fruit, and desserts.

She didn't touch any of it.

Instead, she quietly picked up two dinner rolls and slipped them into her pocket.

Ethan noticed.

"Why are you saving those?"

She smiled shyly.

"My mama gets hungry at night."

That single sentence gave Ethan something he hadn't felt in years.

Hope.

"If your mother is alive," he whispered to himself, "I'm going to find her."

Across town, inside an abandoned warehouse near the river, a weak woman suddenly looked toward the window for no reason at all.

A tear rolled down her face.

May you like

Somehow...

She felt Ethan was finally coming.
