Chapter 10 - The Second Key.

Thomas Reed did not make it past the north gate.

One of the independent security officers found him hiding inside an empty grounds shed.

He did not resist.

He did not look dangerous.

He looked terrified.

Adrian wanted answers immediately.

Priya stopped him.

"Not alone."

So they waited in the small morning room while local investigators arrived.

Margaret remained upstairs.

Noah sat beside Emma with a blanket around his shoulders.

He kept the old staff badge on the table.

When a detective finally questioned Thomas, Adrian and Priya were allowed to listen from the adjoining room.

Thomas was sixty-three.

His hair was gray.

His hands shook constantly.

He admitted entering Vale House through the service corridor.

He admitted taking the medication file from the hidden room.

Then the detective asked the question Emma feared.

"Why did you approach the child?"

Thomas lowered his head.

"I was told Mrs. Vale wanted him upstairs."

"Who told you?"

"Daniel Cross."

Adrian stared through the one-way glass.

Priya's expression did not change.

Thomas continued.

"Daniel called me yesterday."

"He said old records had surfaced."

"He said if I didn't retrieve the file, Margaret would blame everything on me."

The detective asked, "Did Margaret contact you?"

"No."

"Recently?"

"No."

"Three years ago?"

Thomas closed his eyes.

"Yes."

Emma felt cold.

The detective continued.

"Tell me about Celeste Vale's medication."

Thomas rubbed both palms over his knees.

"Mrs. Vale said Mrs. Celeste wasn't sleeping."

"She said the doctor wouldn't increase the dose."

"She had an old prescription of her own."

"She told me to replace a few tablets."

Adrian looked away.

Emma kept watching.

"Did you know that was improper?"

"Yes."

"Why did you do it?"

"I worked for the family for twenty years."

"That is not an answer."

Thomas swallowed.

"Because when Margaret Vale gave an instruction, people treated it like a rule."

The detective leaned forward.

"How many tablets?"

Thomas hesitated.

"Four."

"Four at once?"

"No."

"In the bottle."

"Did you tell Celeste?"

"No."

"Did Margaret?"

"I don't know."

"Did Daniel know?"

"Later."

Thomas's voice cracked.

"Celeste found out."

"She confronted us."

"Daniel told me to leave town until things settled."

"Then she died the next morning."

Emma closed her eyes.

Adrian's face was rigid.

The detective asked, "Did you tamper with her vehicle?"

Thomas looked horrified.

"No."

"Did anyone instruct you to?"

"No."

"Did you ever hear anyone discuss harming her?"

"No."

Emma exhaled.

It did not make the truth good.

It made it real.

A terrible instruction.

A frightened employee.

A dangerous boundary crossed.

A wet road the next morning.

No clean proof of causation.

Just consequences no one could undo.

Thomas admitted he had kept one thing.

A copy of the original medication log.

He had hidden it in a storage unit.

Daniel discovered that months later.

He paid Thomas to move away and remain silent.

When the investigators took Thomas from the room, Adrian did not follow.

He sat beside Noah.

The boy looked up.

"Is Grandma in trouble?"

Adrian took a long time to answer.

"Grandma made choices that hurt people."

"Is she bad?"

Adrian looked at Emma.

Celeste's instruction returned.

Do not teach him to hate Margaret.

"No."

Adrian spoke carefully.

"People are more complicated than good and bad."

"She did things that were wrong."

"Very wrong."

"And adults have to answer for what they do."

Noah nodded slowly.

Then he held up the locket.

"It won't close."

Emma took it.

The hinge had shifted slightly.

She pressed the edge.

The back panel clicked.

Emma frowned.

Adrian leaned closer.

A second compartment opened behind the photograph.

Inside lay a flat steel key no longer than Emma's thumbnail.

Everyone stared.

Noah smiled faintly.

"I fixed it."

Emma almost laughed.

Adrian picked up the key.

"What is this for?"

Emma examined the inner rim.

Three tiny letters had been scratched beside the compartment.

BWB.

Blackwood Bank.

Priya saw it.

"Another custody lock."

Adrian stood.

The next morning, they returned to Blackwood.

Evelyn Shaw recognized the steel key immediately.

"There was a second release condition."

Emma's pulse quickened.

"Why didn't you mention it?"

"Because the first archive instructed us not to."

Evelyn led them to another vault.

This case was smaller.

It contained no bank statements.

No trust documents.

Only a portable audio recorder and a sealed note.

The note was addressed to Adrian.

He opened it.

Celeste had written one paragraph.

If you found this key, Noah probably opened the locket the way I always did by accident.

Emma laughed through sudden tears.

Adrian did too.

The next line changed his face.

This recording is the last conversation I had with Margaret before I left the house.

Do not listen unless you are ready to stop asking whether I imagined it.

Adrian looked at Emma.

Then at Priya.

He pressed play.

At first there was only room noise.

Then Celeste's voice.

"I know about the trust."

Margaret answered.

"You know fragments."

"I know Adrian's signature was copied."

Silence.

Then Margaret spoke.

"You have no idea what it takes to preserve a family like this."

Celeste's voice remained steady.

"Stealing from Noah preserves him?"

"That money never left the family."

"It left his trust."

"It paid for structures that protect him."

"Structures you own."

Margaret's voice sharpened.

"You came into this house with nothing and immediately began judging how it survives."

Celeste answered.

"I came into this house loving your son."

"And I am leaving loving him."

Adrian closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

Margaret said, "You are not taking Noah."

Celeste answered, "Watch me."

A chair scraped.

Margaret's voice lowered.

"You are exhausted."

"You are medicated."

"You have documented anxiety."

"You have a history a court will hear."

Celeste paused.

Then she said, "You put your pills in my bottle."

Margaret did not answer.

Celeste continued.

"Thomas told me."

A long silence followed.

When Margaret finally spoke, her voice was quieter.

"I wanted you to sleep."

"You wanted me easier to manage."

"You were unraveling."

"No."

Celeste's voice became firm.

"I was resisting you."

The recording stopped there.

Adrian stared at the device.

"That's it?"

Evelyn pointed to the counter.

"There is another file."

Adrian pressed the button.

Celeste's voice returned.

This time she was alone.

"If Margaret tells Adrian I was leaving him, that is not true."

"I was leaving this house."

"I wanted him to come."

"If he couldn't, I was going to wait somewhere safe until he understood."

Emma wiped her eyes.

Celeste continued.

"I do not know whether the medication contributed to anything that happens after this."

"I am recording that because I refuse to turn suspicion into certainty."

Priya nodded almost imperceptibly.

Even in fear, Celeste had been careful.

Then came the last sentence.

"But the trust fraud is real."

"And Daniel has the original instructions proving who ordered it."

The audio ended.

Adrian looked at Priya.

"Daniel said he forged signatures."

"Yes."

"But Celeste says he has instructions."

Priya understood.

"A directive."

"From Margaret."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

They called Daniel from the bank.

He answered.

Adrian did not waste words.

"Celeste said you kept the original instructions."

Silence.

Daniel finally whispered, "I did."

"Where?"

"Not over the phone."

"Then meet me."

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because Margaret knows I came back."

Adrian stared at the phone.

"Where are you?"

Daniel breathed heavily.

Then he gave an address.

An old law office downtown.

Before Adrian could answer, Daniel added one warning.

"Come without your mother."

Adrian's voice was flat.

"Obviously."

Daniel sounded almost afraid to say the next sentence.

"That's not what I mean."

"Margaret isn't at Vale House anymore."
