CHAPTER 3: DAWN AT THE EDGE OF EVERYTHING

They escaped through the forest.
Barefoot. Bleeding. Running through cold water and broken branches while distant voices faded behind them.
By dawn, only the lake remained behind them—silent again, as if nothing had happened.
They reached an old roadside chapel miles away, abandoned and crumbling.
Clara collapsed inside.
Ethan held Lily close while listening to sirens in the distance—not approaching, but circling.
“They won’t stop,” Ethan said.
Clara nodded. “But now they can’t hide either.”
She revealed one final truth: the upload wasn’t just evidence—it was a live trigger. If anything happened to her, the system would automatically release everything to global networks.
That meant she was no longer just a target.
She was a key.
Footsteps echoed outside the chapel.
Slow. Deliberate.
The doors creaked open.
A man stood in the doorway—someone Ethan recognized.
Not from Clara’s past.
From his own.
“I told you,” the man said calmly. “You were never meant to find her again.”
Ethan stood up slowly, shielding Lily behind him.
Clara looked at the man—and for the first time since their reunion, fear returned to her eyes.
Because this wasn’t just her family’s war anymore.
It had always included Ethan.

The man raised his hand.
And the chapel lights went out.
