Chapter 18 - The Boy Who Remembered.

Darkness swallowed the greenhouse.

Maya heard glass rattle as someone moved between the tables.

“Celeste.”

No answer.

A second later, the emergency lights came on in a dim red glow.

The far door stood open.

Celeste was gone.

Detective Ortiz entered with two officers.

“She used the irrigation power cut as a distraction.”

Maya looked toward the service exit.

“She still has the brass key.”

Ortiz spoke into her radio.

“Seal the property again.”

Jonathan arrived moments later, furious and frightened.

“You let her get away.”

Ortiz turned on him.

“Your wife has spent years studying every weakness in this house.”

“Today she is using yours.”

Jonathan went silent.

Maya returned to the hospital that afternoon.

Noah was stronger.

His color had improved, and the monitors no longer alarmed every time he moved.

The toxicology results had found a prescription sedating medication in his system that could explain his weakness and slowed heart rate.

There was no legitimate prescription for Noah.

The blue bottle from the pantry contained the same medication.

That evidence alone changed the case dramatically.

But Maya kept thinking about Celeste's key.

She described it to Noah.

Small.

Old brass.

Oval head.

A tiny scratch across one side.

Noah stared at the ceiling.

“Mom's music box.”

Maya leaned closer.

“What?”

“The key opened Mom's music box.”

“The one from the storage room?”

Noah nodded.

“She said never wind it all the way.”

“Why?”

He frowned.

“Because it wasn't just music.”

Maya immediately called Ortiz.

They returned to the mansion storage room and found Evelyn's music box exactly where Maya had seen it that morning.

It was made of dark wood with tiny brass stars around the lid.

The visible winding key underneath was silver.

Celeste's brass key did not fit it.

Noah joined them by video call from the hospital.

“Turn it over,” he said.

Maya did.

“There is a little star near the corner.”

She found it.

“Push it.”

A hidden panel opened in the base.

Inside was a second lock.

The brass key would fit perfectly.

But Celeste still had it.

Jonathan slammed his hand against a shelf.

“She has the only key.”

Noah's voice came through the phone.

“No.”

Everyone looked at the screen.

“Mom always made two.”

Maya smiled despite herself.

“Where is the second one?”

Noah looked embarrassed.

“In Fox.”

His stuffed fox was still beneath his pillow upstairs.

Maya found it exactly where it had been before his disappearance.

One seam along the back had been carefully repaired by hand.

Inside the stuffing was a second brass key.

Jonathan stared at the toy.

“All this time.”

Maya carried the key downstairs.

It opened the music box compartment.

Inside was a memory card wrapped in waxed paper.

A handwritten label read FOR NOAH.

Ortiz inserted the card into a secured laptop.

There were seven files.

Six were family videos.

The seventh was titled FINAL.

Evelyn appeared on screen.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Noah, if you are old enough to see this, then someone may already have tried to make you doubt yourself.”

The boy on the phone began to cry.

Evelyn continued.

“You are not the danger in this family.”

May you like

Then she named the person she feared most.

It was not Celeste.
