Chapter 3: Four Years Later

Chapter 3: Four Years Later
"Daddy would have loved this."
I smiled as Noah raced across the backyard chasing butterflies.
Grace sat beneath a tree drawing pictures with crayons.
They were four years old now.
Healthy.
Happy.
Safe.
The exact future Caleb had wanted for them.
I still missed him every day.
Grief never completely disappears.
It simply learns how to sit quietly beside love.
The front gate opened.
Amanda walked in carrying a folder.
"Good news," she said.
I laughed.
"After four years, you still start every visit like a lawyer."
She handed me the paperwork.
The final court ruling.
Every legal challenge from my family had been dismissed.
The trust belonged solely to me and the twins.
The fight was officially over.
That evening, after Amanda left, I sat on the porch watching the sunset.
Noah climbed onto my lap.
"Mommy?"
"Yes?"
"Do you think Daddy can see us?"
I looked toward the orange sky.
And for a moment, I imagined Caleb standing there, smiling the way he always did.
"I think he can."
Grace rested her head against my shoulder.
"Is he proud of us?"
My eyes filled with tears.
"More than you could ever imagine."
The twins smiled.
The wind moved gently through the trees.
And somehow, for the first time since Caleb's death, the ache inside my heart felt lighter.
Because I finally understood something.
My father had tried to take everything from me.
My husband had made sure he failed.
Not with money.
Not with lawyers.
Not with secrets.
But with love.
The kind of love that plans ahead.
The kind of love that protects.
The kind of love that survives even death.
As darkness settled over the yard, Noah and Grace fell asleep beside me.
I wrapped my arms around them and looked at the stars.
"We're okay, Caleb," I whispered.
"We made it."
And somewhere beyond the night, I felt the answer.
May you like
You always would.
The End.
