Chapter 5 - The Folder Behind The Locked DrawerClaire knew something was wrong the moment she walked into the house.

Not because of anything obvious.

Not because Mark looked angry.

Not because he said anything unusual.

It was something much smaller.

Something most people would have missed.

The house was too quiet.

Mark was not waiting to argue.

He was not defending himself.

He was not asking why she went back to the hospital.

He was simply standing in the kitchen, staring at the floor.

And that frightened her more.

Because Mark only became silent when he was trying to control what happened next.

“Where is Emma?”

Claire asked.

Mark looked up.

“She’s upstairs.”

“Did she eat?”

His expression changed slightly.

“Claire…”

She ignored the hesitation.

“Did she eat?”

“Yes.”

“Did she take her medication?”

Mark didn’t answer immediately.

That pause was enough.

Claire felt her heart tighten.

“What medication?”

The question hung between them.

Mark looked away.

And suddenly, Claire realized something.

There were still things she didn’t know.

More things.

More secrets.

“Mark.”

Her voice became colder.

“What medication?”

He sighed.

“Claire, you’re making this worse.”

The sentence hit her harder than she expected.

Because it was exactly what he always said.

Not:

“I’m sorry.”

Not:

“Let me explain.”

Not:

“You’re right.”

Always the same thing.

You’re making this worse.

She stepped closer.

“No.”

Her eyes locked onto his.

“I’m finally seeing what you refused to show me.”

Mark’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand the situation.”

“Then explain it.”

Silence.

Claire waited.

One second.

Two seconds.

Ten seconds.

Nothing.

“Exactly.”

She turned and walked upstairs.

“Where are you going?”

“To talk to my daughter.”

Mark followed.

“Claire.”

She stopped halfway up the stairs.

“What?”

His face looked different now.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Afraid.

“Don’t pressure her.”

Claire stared at him.

The words felt unbelievable.

“Pressure her?”

“She’s already stressed.”

Claire almost whispered.

“She’s stressed because she was alone.”

Mark looked away.

And Claire knew.

She knew because guilt always appeared before the truth.

She continued upstairs.

Emma was sitting on her bed.

The curtains were closed.

The room was dark.

The heating pad was beside her.

Claire noticed it immediately.

A small object.

A quiet reminder.

A reminder of how long Emma had been suffering.

“Hey.”

Emma looked up.

“Mom.”

Claire sat beside her.

“Can I ask you something?”

Emma nodded.

“Did Dad give you medicine?”

The teenager hesitated.

Then nodded.

“What kind?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire felt a chill.

“You don’t know?”

“He told me it would help.”

“When did he start giving it to you?”

“After the appointment.”

Claire’s mind raced.

After the appointment.

Not before.

After Mark learned something.

“Emma.”

She gently held her daughter’s hand.

“Did Dad tell you what was wrong?”

Emma looked uncomfortable.

“No.”

“Did he say anything about the tests?”

“He said everything was probably fine.”

Claire looked down.

The same words.

Always the same words.

Everything is fine.

But nothing had been fine.

Not even close.

“Emma, did Dad ever make you promise not to tell me?”

The girl became still.

Claire immediately regretted asking.

Not because she didn’t need the answer.

Because she saw the pain in her daughter’s face.

“I’m sorry.”

Emma shook her head.

“No.”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“He didn’t make me promise.”

Claire waited.

“He just said…”

Emma stopped.

“What?”

The girl took a deep breath.

“He said if I loved him, I wouldn’t make him deal with another problem.”

Claire felt like someone had punched the air out of her lungs.

If I loved him.

A fifteen-year-old girl had been manipulated into silence by the person she trusted.

Claire pulled Emma into her arms.

And this time, Emma cried.

Really cried.

The kind of crying that came from holding something inside for too long.

“I thought he was mad because of me.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“No.”

“He was not supposed to make you feel that way.”

After Emma finally fell asleep, Claire stayed in the room.

Watching her.

Protecting her.

Trying to understand how she had missed so much.

Then she noticed something.

A small envelope partially hidden beneath Emma’s books.

At first, Claire thought it was school paperwork.

But then she saw the hospital logo.

Her heart stopped.

She carefully pulled it out.

Inside was a folded paper.

Medical documents.

But not the same ones from the hospital.

These were older.

Much older.

She unfolded the first page.

And froze.

The date was from years earlier.

Before Emma had even become a teenager.

Claire scanned the words.

Then read them again.

Because she couldn’t believe what she was seeing.

A previous concern.

A previous recommendation.

A previous warning.

How many times had this happened?

How many times had someone noticed something...

And how many times had Mark decided she didn’t need to know?

Claire heard footsteps behind her.

She quickly turned.

Emma was standing in the doorway.

Half asleep.

“Mom?”

Claire lowered the paper.

“Where did you get this?”

Emma looked confused.

“Dad gave it to me.”

“Why?”

The girl looked frightened.

“I don’t know.”

Claire held the document tighter.

“When?”

“A few months ago.”

Claire felt cold.

Months ago.

Before the hospital visit.

Before the secret.

Before everything exploded.

“Emma.”

Her voice softened.

“Did Dad ever tell you not to open this?”

Emma nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The girl looked down.

“He said it would only scare me.”

Claire stared at the document.

Then at her daughter.

And suddenly she understood.

Mark wasn’t hiding one thing.

He had been hiding a pattern.

A pattern that started long before the hospital.

The next morning, Claire waited until Mark left for work.

Then she searched the house.

Not because she wanted to.

Because she needed answers.

She checked the office.

Nothing.

The desk drawers.

Nothing.

The filing cabinet.

Locked.

That caught her attention.

Mark never locked the filing cabinet.

Never.

Claire searched for the key.

Ten minutes later, she found it taped beneath the bottom drawer.

Her hands shook as she unlocked it.

Inside were folders.

Bills.

Tax documents.

Insurance papers.

And one folder with no label.

Her heartbeat increased.

She opened it.

The first page was a medical report.

Emma’s name was written at the top.

Claire felt her breath disappear.

She turned the page.

Then another.

Then another.

And on the final page...

She saw Mark’s signature.

Next to a handwritten note.

A note that made her blood run cold.

“Do not discuss this with Claire until we know more.”

Claire stared at the sentence.

Over and over.

Because now there was no doubt.

Mark had made a decision.

A deliberate decision.

To keep her away from the truth.

But the question that terrified Claire was not why he hid it.

The question was:

What was he afraid she would discover?

And when Claire found the next document inside that folder...

May you like

She finally understood why Mark had been so desperate to keep everything buried.

To be continued...
