Chapter 2: The Wedding That Was Never About Love
Police officers arrived within minutes.
Derek was nowhere to be found.
But the security footage wasn't finished.
Another camera showed him meeting privately with the venue owner just hours before the ceremony.
Money changed hands.
The older man standing behind the groom suddenly went pale.
He recognized the owner immediately.
Years earlier, the man had been investigated for insurance fraud but escaped conviction because witnesses disappeared.
Everything finally made sense.
The wedding had been chosen because nearly three hundred guests would be inside the ballroom.
A large "accident" meant a massive insurance payout.
The victims were never supposed to survive with enough evidence to expose the truth.
The bride broke into tears.
"My family knew about this?"
Olivia looked at her with sympathy.
"Not your family."
She glanced toward the entrance.
"Only one relative."
Just then, officers escorted Derek into the ballroom.
He had been caught trying to drive away.
The groom confronted him.
"You were willing to kill children... for money?"
Derek lowered his head.
"It wasn't supposed to happen today."
"But it did."
Lily quietly walked over and held her mother's hand tighter.

Without Olivia's quick reaction, the wooden beam would have landed directly where the little girl had been standing only seconds earlier.
The entire ballroom realized how close they had come to witnessing a tragedy.
