Chapter 14 - The Ballroom Trap.

By morning, Evelyn Moretti was in federal custody.

Victor Dane was negotiating through counsel.

Paul Rainer remained under federal supervision.

Matteo was still missing.

News organizations knew only that federal agents had executed searches connected to Moretti Holdings and the family foundation.

No official charges had been announced publicly.

The company's stock dropped six percent before trading was temporarily halted for a material disclosure.

Luca spent the morning with the board, outside counsel, auditors, and regulators.

He disclosed enough to protect shareholders without compromising the investigation.

For the first time in years, Victor's chair beside him was empty.

Matteo's chair was empty too.

Luca looked at both and felt less grief than he expected.

The grief had moved somewhere else.

It belonged to memories.

To family photographs.

To hospital nights that now carried different meanings.

At noon, Renee called with a strange request.

"We want tonight's foundation gala to continue."

Luca thought he misheard.

The annual Moretti Children's Recovery Fund dinner was scheduled in the same hotel ballroom where Sophia had found Hannah.

Evelyn had planned to host it.

After her arrest, Luca intended to cancel.

"Why continue?"

"Matteo contacted the event coordinator."

Luca went still.

"When?"

"Eleven minutes ago."

"What did he want?"

"He asked whether the event was still happening."

"Why?"

"We don't know."

Luca almost heard Renee smiling at her own favorite phrase.

"You think he'll come."

"I think he may believe the crowd gives him cover to reach someone."

"Me?"

"Possibly."

"Sophia?"

Renee's answer came immediately.

"Sophia will not be there."

Luca agreed before she finished.

Hannah also refused to attend at first.

"I'm not bait."

"You're not,"

Luca said.

"Then why did an agent ask whether I'd be comfortable at the hotel?"

Renee answered from across the kitchen.

"Because Matteo may contact you."

Hannah stared at her.

"Why me?"

"He believes Luca trusts you."

"He could call him."

"He may think Luca wants him arrested."

Hannah folded her arms.

"He would be correct."

Renee nodded.

"He may believe you are more sympathetic."

"He would be incorrect."

Luca almost smiled.

Hannah eventually agreed to be in a secure hotel suite, not the ballroom.

She would not appear publicly.

Federal agents controlled all access.

Sophia stayed home with Clare and two vetted protection officers.

Before Luca left, Sophia stopped him in the foyer.

"Are you going to the same room?"

"Yes."

"Where I walked?"

"Yes."

She looked down at her feet.

"Don't let them make it a bad place."

Luca felt his throat tighten.

"I won't."

The ballroom looked almost identical to the night everything changed.

Same chandeliers.

Same marble.

Same stage.

Different tables.

The staff had replaced the glassware Hannah dropped.

Luca could still point to the exact place where she had fallen to her knees.

Guests began arriving at seven.

The event had been reframed as a smaller fundraising dinner with Luca hosting in Evelyn's absence.

Rumors moved through the room faster than servers.

Luca gave no comment.

Naomi sat near the stage.

Renee's agents blended among hotel security, catering staff, and guests.

At 7:42 p.m., Hannah's phone rang upstairs.

Unknown number.

Renee signaled for her to answer normally.

"Hello?"

Matteo's voice came through.

"Hannah."

She closed her eyes briefly.

"Yes."

"I need to talk to Luca."

"Then call Luca."

"He won't listen."

"You pushed his daughter's car toward a bridge."

Renee lifted a hand, cautioning her not to argue.

Matteo breathed heavily.

"I didn't push it."

"You stayed behind it."

"Victor triggered the brakes."

"And you drove away."

Silence.

"I panicked."

Hannah looked at Renee.

"What do you want?"

"I have proof my mother ordered everything."

"They already have proof."

Matteo's breathing changed.

"What proof?"

Hannah did not answer.

"Where is Luca?"

"Downstairs."

"Tell him to meet me in the service corridor behind the ballroom."

Renee began writing instructions on a notepad.

Hannah read them.

"Why would he do that?"

"Because I know where Elias's original dash module is."

Everyone in the suite went still.

The recovered mirror server contained audio and telemetry.

The physical dash module from the sedan had been listed as destroyed during post-crash recovery.

If it still existed, it could contain data no one had seen.

Hannah asked, "Where?"

"I bring it if Luca comes alone."

Renee shook her head.

Hannah said, "He's not coming alone."

Matteo laughed bitterly.

"Then he doesn't get it."

The call ended.

Agents traced the signal to a cell sector covering the hotel.

Matteo was already inside or nearby.

Renee moved Luca out of the ballroom under the appearance of taking a business call.

He met Hannah in the secure suite.

"He's here,"

she said.

"I know."

"He claims he has the dash module."

Luca looked at Renee.

"Do you believe him?"

"We believe he believes it's leverage."

Agents searched service corridors without alarming guests.

At 8:03 p.m., a catering supervisor reported a man in a hotel maintenance jacket entering a restricted stairwell.

Security footage showed Matteo.

He was carrying a narrow black case.

Renee wanted him contained away from civilians.

The service corridor behind the ballroom led to a loading area and two emergency exits.

Agents positioned quietly.

Matteo called Hannah again.

"Where is he?"

"Here."

Luca took the phone.

"I'm here, Matt."

Silence.

Then Matteo whispered, "You don't understand what she did to me."

Luca's voice remained flat.

"You are forty-six years old."

"She controlled everything."

"Not your hands on the wheel."

Matteo breathed out shakily.

"I can prove Victor triggered the service command."

"Then give it to the agents."

"I want a deal."

"I'm not the government."

"You're Luca Moretti."

"For once, that isn't useful to you."

Matteo cursed under his breath.

"Come to the corridor."

Renee shook her head.

Luca continued.

"Walk into the ballroom."

Everyone looked at him.

Matteo went silent.

"What?"

"You wanted family."

Luca looked through the suite's monitor at the gala below.

"Walk into the room where Sophia stood up."

"Why?"

"Because you spent nine months hiding behind closed doors."

Renee frowned, but then seemed to understand.

The ballroom had controlled entrances, extensive cameras, and agents already in place.

It was safer than an unknown service corridor.

Matteo hesitated.

"No police around me."

Luca answered truthfully.

"I don't control where federal agents stand."

"Then forget it."

"You called me."

Silence stretched.

"Five minutes,"

Matteo said.

The call ended.

Renee looked at Luca.

"Do not improvise again."

"It worked."

"We don't know that yet."

Five minutes later, the side ballroom door opened.

Matteo walked in wearing a maintenance jacket over a dress shirt.

He carried the black case.

Conversations slowed as guests recognized him.

Luca stood near the center aisle.

For one surreal second, the scene echoed Sophia's walk toward Hannah.

A person crossing polished marble while a room fell silent.

But there was no relief in Matteo's face.

Only exhaustion.

He stopped ten feet from Luca.

"You brought them."

"You brought yourself."

Matteo looked around.

He saw Renee near the bar.

Two agents moved closer without touching him.

Matteo's shoulders dropped.

"Mom said you'd take everything."

Luca looked at his brother.

"She taught you to call consequences theft."

Matteo flinched.

He set the black case on the floor.

"The module is inside."

Renee approached.

"Step away from the case."

Matteo obeyed.

Guests were quietly directed toward the opposite side of the ballroom.

No shouting.

No spectacle.

Renee opened the case after a technician checked it.

Inside was a water-damaged vehicle electronics unit wrapped in anti-static material.

A handwritten evidence tag was still attached.

ASHWOOD - UNIT 3.

Someone had removed it from official storage before the post-crash inventory was completed.

Matteo looked at Luca.

"Victor kept it."

"Why?"

"Insurance."

"Against you?"

"Against everyone."

Renee placed Matteo under arrest.

As agents turned him toward the exit, he looked across the ballroom at the patch of marble where Sophia had collapsed into Hannah's arms.

His face changed.

"Did she really walk here?"

Luca stared at him.

"Yes."

Matteo swallowed.

"I'm glad."

Luca's answer was quiet.

"You don't get to use her recovery to feel better about what you did."

Matteo lowered his eyes.

Agents led him away.

The ballroom remained silent.

Then Naomi approached Luca.

"The gala is effectively over."

He looked around at the donors who had come to support children's rehabilitation and instead witnessed the Moretti family fracture in public.

"No."

Naomi frowned.

Luca walked toward the stage.

He did not discuss arrests or evidence.

He did not defend the family name.

He took the microphone and looked at the room.

"Nine months ago, my daughter survived something that should never have happened."

The room became still.

"Tonight, I learned again that protecting a name is not the same as protecting people."

Hannah watched from a secure monitor upstairs.

Luca continued.

"The foundation will undergo an independent audit, new leadership, and full public reporting."

"Every dollar that was diverted will be pursued and restored."

"And tonight's donations will be held by an outside nonprofit partner until that work is complete."

Naomi's eyebrows rose.

She had not approved that sentence.

She also did not stop him.

Luca looked toward the exact place where Sophia had walked.

"This room will not belong to what my family did wrong."

"It will belong to what my daughter did right."

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Clare, watching the livestream from Luca's home with Sophia, sent him a text.

May you like

Sophia says your speech was acceptable.

Luca laughed for the first time in days.
