Chapter 4: Judgment
Richard faced the chairman of Hawthorne International's board.
"I have one recommendation."
The chairman nodded.
"We're listening."
Richard didn't hesitate.
"Effective immediately, Ethan Hawthorne is removed from every executive position within the company."
A unanimous chorus answered.
"Approved."
Ethan's confidence shattered.
"You can't do this!"
Richard calmly removed a folder from his briefcase.
"I already did."
Inside were signed legal documents.
Months earlier, Richard had quietly transferred voting control away from Ethan after discovering suspicious financial activity.
"You were being tested."
"You failed."
Security approached.
Vanessa burst into tears.
"I only wanted people to respect me."
Richard looked at her with quiet disappointment.
"Respect cannot be stolen."
"It has to be earned."
As security escorted Ethan toward the exit, he turned back.
"Grandfather... please."
Richard never looked up.
