Chapter 2 — The Child Who Couldn't Be Silenced

Chapter 2 — The Child Who Couldn't Be Silenced
Nobody spoke.
The silence lasted only a few seconds, but inside the Whitmore estate, it felt like an entire lifetime.
Every pair of eyes shifted from the little girl to Vivian Cole.
Nathaniel Whitmore had just entered the foyer when he heard the child's words.
"The pretty lady pushed her."
He stopped halfway across the marble floor.
"What did she say?"
No one answered.
Vivian recovered first.
Her smile returned—not warm, but practiced.
"Nathaniel," she said gently, "she's only a toddler. She doesn't understand what she saw."
The little girl hugged her stuffed rabbit tighter.
"I saw."
Just three words.
No hesitation.
No confusion.
Nathaniel looked up at the child.
"What is your name?"
"...Emma."
"Emma," he said calmly, "can you tell me what happened?"
Rosa's heart pounded.
She wanted to stop him.
Children imagined things.
Adults dismissed them.
But Emma simply pointed toward the top step.
"The pretty lady was angry."
Another pause.
"Grandma said... no."
Vivian's fingers tightened around the diamond ring Nathaniel had given her.
"She's repeating something she overheard."
Emma shook her head.
"No."
Her tiny voice remained steady.
"The pretty lady used both hands."
A ripple spread across the gathered staff.
Vivian's expression hardened for only an instant before softening again.
"This is ridiculous."
Nathaniel didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at the staircase.
Then at his mother's cane.
It rested nearly six steps above where Margaret had landed.
His brows slowly drew together.
His mother never climbed stairs without holding that cane.
Never.
If she had slipped naturally...
...why was the cane still behind her?
The question lingered unanswered.
Then the paramedics burst through the front doors.
They carefully loaded Margaret onto a stretcher.
Just before the oxygen mask covered her face...
Her fingers moved.
Barely.
She reached weakly toward Nathaniel.
Then whispered one broken word.
"...camera..."
Before anyone could ask what she meant, she lost consciousness again.
Nathaniel stared after the ambulance.
For the first time that evening...
He wasn't looking at Rosa.
May you like
He was looking at Vivian.
And Vivian realized she had just lost control of the room.
