CHAPTER 2: THE TRUTH COLLAPSES

An hour later, stacks of files covered the marble counter.

Twenty-seven complaints.

Employees forced to work unpaid overtime.

Customers manipulated into purchasing overpriced products.

Workers humiliated in front of clients.

And Vanessa's name appeared everywhere.

She wasn't even an executive.

She was simply abusing power because she was engaged to Daniel Ross, the regional director.

Daniel rushed into the store.

“What the hell is happening?”

Then he saw Eleanor.

His legs nearly gave out beneath him.

“Mrs. Whitmore…”

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

“Baby, tell them this is all a misunderstanding.”

Daniel slowly pulled away from her.

“You threatened her?”

Vanessa nodded.

“I didn't know who she was.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“That doesn't make it better.”

Eleanor stood up.

“Exactly.”

She looked directly at Vanessa.

“The measure of a person's character is how they treat people they believe have no power.”

Vanessa burst into tears.

“Please… give me another chance.”

Eleanor remained calm.

“You had thousands of chances.”

Then she turned toward Daniel.

“Effective immediately, you're removed from your position pending investigation.”

Daniel nodded without arguing.

“I understand.”

Vanessa stared at him in disbelief.

“You're not defending me?”

Daniel answered quietly.

“I spent years building my career.”

He looked at her with disappointment.

“And you destroyed everything in one afternoon.”
