Chapter 6 – Voices That Could No Longer Be Silenced

Three days later, the investigation had gained more momentum than anyone expected.
Detective Sarah Collins sat in a conference room at the Chicago Police Department, surrounded by case files, photographs, medical reports, and witness statements.
Every hour seemed to bring another piece of evidence.
Every new fact made Ryan Carter's version of events less believable.
When Assistant State's Attorney Rebecca Lawson entered the room, she placed two folders on the table.
"They're here," she said.
Detective Collins looked up.
"The former girlfriends?"
Rebecca nodded.
"They're both ready to give formal statements."
The first woman introduced herself as Jessica Moore.
She looked nervous, twisting a tissue between her fingers.
"I haven't talked about Ryan in years," she admitted.
"I tried to forget."
Detective Collins spoke gently.
"Take your time."
Jessica nodded.
"When Ryan and I started dating, he was wonderful."
"He brought me flowers."
"He cooked dinner."
"He made me feel like I was the only person in the world."
She gave a sad smile.
"Then he started deciding who I could spend time with."
The detective recognized the pattern immediately.
"Did he isolate you?"
Jessica nodded.
"From my friends."
"My family."
"Even my coworkers."
"When I tried to leave..."
She hesitated.
"He pushed me into a kitchen counter."
She slowly rolled up her sleeve.
A faint scar stretched along her forearm.
"I still have this."
An hour later, the second witness arrived.
Her name was Olivia Grant.
Unlike Jessica, she wasn't nervous.
She was angry.
"I've waited six years for this day."
She placed an old smartphone on the table.
"I never deleted anything."
Inside the phone were dozens of text messages from Ryan.
At first, they sounded loving.
Then they became controlling.
Where are you?
Why didn't you answer?
If you really loved me, you'd stay home.
Eventually, the messages turned threatening.
You'll regret leaving me.
No one will believe you.
Olivia looked directly at Detective Collins.
"He never punched me in the face."
"He always hit places no one could see."
The room fell silent.
It was exactly what Emily had described.
At the hospital, I had finally been moved from the emergency unit to a private maternity room.
The doctors wanted to keep monitoring the baby for another week.
Although the bruises still hurt, my blood pressure had improved.
For the first time in months, I slept through the night without waking up in fear.
That morning, a nurse smiled as she entered my room.
"Good news."
"The baby's heartbeat sounds perfect today."
She placed the monitor against my stomach.
Within seconds, the familiar rhythm filled the room.
Thump...
Thump...
Thump...
Dad smiled from across the room.
"Strong just like Mom."
I laughed softly.
"I hope the baby gets Mom's patience."
He chuckled.
"And your stubbornness."
For a brief moment...
We weren't thinking about court.
Or Ryan.
Or bruises.
We were simply a father and daughter waiting for a new life to begin.
That afternoon, Detective Collins stopped by with another update.
"I thought you'd like to hear some good news."
Dad looked up from the chair beside my bed.
"We could use some."
She smiled.
"The judge approved a protective order."
Ryan is now prohibited from contacting you in any way."
I let out a breath I didn't realize I'd been holding.
"He can't call?"
"No."
"He can't write?"
"No."
"He can't come here?"
"Absolutely not."
The detective paused.
"And if he violates the order, he'll face additional criminal charges."
For the first time, I truly believed I was safe.
Meanwhile, Ryan sat alone in the county jail.
The confidence he had shown during his arrest had disappeared.
His attorney placed another stack of papers on the table.
"We have a problem."
Ryan frowned.
"What now?"
"The prosecution has two former girlfriends willing to testify."
Ryan's expression hardened.
"They're lying."
"Maybe."
His attorney sighed.
"But their stories match Emily's almost perfectly."
Ryan leaned back in silence.
Then another document slid across the table.
"What's this?"
"Your mother's text messages."
Ryan read only the first page before his face turned pale.
"She kept those?"
His attorney nodded.
"They've been recovered from her tablet."
Ryan buried his face in his hands.
For the first time since his arrest...
He realized this wasn't a misunderstanding.
It was a case built on evidence.
Late that evening, my father stepped out of the hospital to answer a phone call.
The number belonged to General Thomas Walker, his commanding officer.
"James."
"Sir."
"I've been briefed."
There was a brief silence.
"I'm sorry."
Dad looked toward my hospital window.
"So am I."
The general spoke again.
"Take all the leave you need."
"Your place is with your daughter."
Dad smiled.
"Thank you, sir."
"And James..."
"Yes, sir?"
"When this is over..."
"Tell Emily she has the support of every soldier in your unit."
Dad's eyes filled with tears.
"I will."
As he slipped his phone back into his pocket, he looked up at the night sky.
For weeks, he had blamed himself for not seeing the truth sooner.
Now, he made himself one final promise.
No matter how long the investigation took...
No matter how difficult the trial became...
His daughter would never have to face another battle alone.
Inside the hospital, I rested my hand on my stomach as my baby kicked gently.
It felt like a reminder.
Life was still growing.
Hope was still alive.

And somewhere across the city, the prosecutors were preparing to file new charges—charges that would leave Ryan and Linda with far more to answer for than they ever imagined.
