CHAPTER 3: THE HOUSE OF CARDS

CHAPTER 3: THE HOUSE OF CARDS

The next morning came without sleep for anyone in the Whitmore estate.

By sunrise, lawyers had arrived.

Not Daniel’s lawyers.

Margaret’s.

The mansion that once symbolized Daniel’s power now felt like a courtroom waiting to collapse.

Sophia sat in a quiet room upstairs, far from the chaos. A nurse had checked on her earlier. The baby was fine, but stress was dangerously high. Still, Sophia couldn’t bring herself to lie down.

Every few minutes, she heard footsteps. Voices. Arguments bleeding through the walls.

Downstairs, Daniel was unraveling.

“This is insane,” he snapped at one of the attorneys. “I’ve been running Whitmore Legal Division for years.”

One of the lawyers slid a folder across the table.

“You’ve been managing a division,” he corrected. “Under delegated authority. Revocable at any time.”

Daniel stared at the paper.

“No…”

But the signatures were already there.

Margaret Whitmore.

Primary controlling shareholder.

Founder of the Whitmore empire.

The name Daniel had spent his entire life using like a shield—without ever truly owning it.

Meanwhile, Emma sat in another room, answering questions with shaking hands. Emails. Receipts. Hotel records. Messages she thought were private. None of them were.

Sophia didn’t know all the details yet.

But she felt something changing in the air.

For the first time in years… she wasn’t the one on trial.

Later that afternoon, Margaret found her again.

“You’re going to leave him,” Margaret said.

It wasn’t a question.

Sophia looked down at her hands. “I don’t know how.”

Margaret sat beside her.

“You already did,” she replied quietly. “The moment you said ‘I don’t want this anymore,’ you just needed the world to catch up.”

Sophia swallowed hard.

“And him?” she asked.

Margaret didn’t hesitate.

“He built his life on control and assumption. Men like that don’t lose gracefully.”

A pause.

Then softer:

“But they do lose.”
