Silence swallowed the hallway.
Victoria Ashford's trembling fingers loosened around her diamond clutch. It slipped from her hand and shattered against the marble floor.
"No..." she whispered. "That's impossible."
The bride calmly placed the wedding ring into her palm.
"My name isn't just Amelia Carter anymore."
She pulled a folded document from her bouquet.
"The acquisition was finalized this morning. Every share your family borrowed against has already been purchased."
Victoria snatched the papers.
Her eyes raced across the signatures.
Her husband.
The board.
The federal filing.
Every page was authentic.
"You... you planned this?"
Amelia nodded.
"I never planned revenge."
"I planned protection."
The doors at the end of the hallway opened.
Members of the Ashford Board entered with their attorneys.
No one greeted Victoria.
Instead, every executive walked directly toward Amelia.
"Congratulations, Chairwoman Carter."
The words struck harder than any slap.
Victoria suddenly realized the woman she had called a gold digger now owned every building, every patent, every investment the Ashford family had spent three generations building.
