CHAPTER 3 — “The Truth Beneath the Water”

The man stands slowly, torn between both women.

The younger woman in white takes one step forward for the first time.

Not aggressive.

Just certain.

“You came too late,” she says quietly.

The man’s jaw tightens. “What are you talking about?”

She looks toward the fountain.

Then back at him.

“Ask her what she did twenty years ago.”

The mother’s breathing becomes unstable. Panic flashes in her eyes for the first time.

“No…” she whispers. “Please…”

The man looks down at her—confused, shaken, searching her face for truth.

The younger woman lowers her gaze.

“I wasn’t the one holding the scissors first,” she says.

A long silence.

Only the sound of water.

The man steps back, as if the ground beneath him is no longer stable.

And for the first time, he begins to understand—

this moment was not where the story started.

It was where it finally caught up.
