Chapter 4: The Viral Storm

When I woke up the next morning, the hospital room was quiet. Sunlight filtered through the blinds, casting a warm glow over Sophie, who was finally breathing evenly.
I grabbed my phone from the bedside table and turned it on.
My phone froze instantly.
It buzzed continuously, emitting a solid, unbroken vibration as hundreds of notifications flooded the screen per second.
Facebook. Instagram. Twitter. TikTok. My email. My voicemail. Everything was entirely maxed out.
When the screen finally stabilized, I opened Facebook.
My post didn't just have a few comments.
It had 4.2 million views.
It had over 150,000 shares.
I scrolled through the comments, my jaw dropping.
"Omg, lock this monster up right now! That poor baby!"
"Wait, is that Preston Hayes from Vanguard Financial? I used to work with him. He's always been a narcissistic psycho."
"Someone find this family and make them pay. The parents just stood there! Disgusting!"
"Internet sleuths, do your thing. Tag the Chicago PD!"
The video had been downloaded and re-uploaded across TikTok, spliced with commentary from true-crime creators. People had already identified the hotel, found out who the general manager was, and flooded the Whitmore Hotel’s Yelp page with one-star reviews calling out their corruption.
My voicemail inbox was completely full.
There were five voicemails from my mother.
Seven from my father.
Twenty from Preston.
I didn't listen to them. I didn't care what lies they were trying to spin now.
Instead, I opened an email from an address I didn't recognize.
Subject: URGENT - Media Inquiry - Good Morning America
Hi Evelyn, my name is Sarah and I am a producer with GMA. We saw your horrific video. We want to fly you and your daughter out to New York, all expenses paid, to tell your story on national television. Please call me ASAP.
Before I could even process the email, the heavy wooden door to Sophie's hospital room swung violently open.
Standing in the doorway, looking absolutely unhinged, was Preston. His custom suit was wrinkled, his hair was a mess, and his face was red with fury. Beside him was our father, flanked by a man in a sharp grey suit—their high-priced lawyer.
"Take it down!" Preston hissed, storming into the room. "Take that fake video down right now, you crazy bitch!"
"Keep your voice down," I warned, stepping protectively in front of Sophie's bed. "Or I will press the call button and have security drag you out by your hair."
"Evelyn," my father said, using his deep, authoritative voice that used to terrify me. "You have ruined this family. Preston's firm suspended him this morning. Chloe's parents are threatening to annul the marriage. You are going to delete that post, and you are going to issue a public apology stating the video was doctored by AI."
I looked at them. The three men who thought they owned the world.

I didn't cower. I didn't cry.
I smiled.
"I can't take it down, Dad," I said calmly. "It's not just on my page anymore. It's everywhere. And by the way... Good Morning America says hello."
