Chapter 1 – The Words She Had Buried

"No… I never approved this."

The whisper barely escaped Evelyn Hawthorne's lips, but it carried the weight of twenty years.

Her son, Ethan, looked from the pocket watch to the barefoot boy.

"What does it mean?" he asked.

Evelyn couldn't answer.

Instead, she stared at the engraving.

Subject separation authorized.

Those words belonged to a past she had spent nearly thirteen years trying to erase.

Years earlier...

Evelyn had given birth prematurely after a complicated pregnancy.

She remembered pain.

She remembered alarms.

She remembered doctors rushing her into surgery.

Then darkness.

When she woke, her husband, Jonathan, sat beside her hospital bed with swollen red eyes.

"The second baby didn't make it," he had whispered.

She had cried until she had nothing left.

Nobody questioned the explanation.

Not the nurses.

Not the hospital board.

Not even Evelyn herself.

Because grief leaves little room for suspicion.

Now the impossible stood in front of her.

Alive.

Breathing.

Watching her.

The street boy quietly closed the pocket watch.

"My name is Noah."

His voice sounded almost identical to Ethan's.

"I'm your son."

Silence swallowed the street.

Cars continued passing.

People hurried by without noticing that one family's entire history had just been rewritten.

Ethan looked at his mother.

"Is he lying?"

Tears gathered in Evelyn's eyes.

"I... I don't know anymore."

Noah reached into his backpack and removed an old envelope.

"I was told to give this to you when I turned twelve."

The paper was yellow with age.

Across the front was written only one sentence.

For Evelyn Hawthorne—Only if Noah Finds You.

Her hands shook as she opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Not from Jonathan.

From Dr. Richard Mason.

The physician who had supervised her delivery.

The first line made her knees weaken.

Mrs. Hawthorne, if you are reading this, then I failed to protect your family.
