Chapter 1: The Locked Rooms

Chapter 1: The Locked Rooms
No one moved.
Not the servants.
Not Vivian.
Not even Elena.
Only the sound of rain striking the windows filled the suffocating silence.
Alejandro crossed the marble floor slowly, as though afraid that if he moved too quickly, the woman standing before him would disappear again.
"Elena," he whispered.
She took an instinctive step backward.
The movement hurt him more than any confirmation that she had suffered.
She wasn't afraid of strangers.
She was afraid of him.
"I'm not going to hurt you," he said gently.
For a long moment, she simply stared at him, searching his face.
Then tears filled her eyes.
"Alejandro..."
Before she could say another word, Vivian laughed softly from the staircase.
"What a touching reunion."
Alejandro didn't even look at her.
Security guards hired by Castillo Industries rushed through the front doors within minutes, followed by Alejandro's personal attorney and two retired federal investigators who had worked for him during the years he searched for Elena.
Vivian finally lost her composure.
"You can't do this!" she shouted.
"I already did."
Two guards stepped beside her.
"You're not leaving this house."
Vivian's confident smile vanished.
"You have no proof."
Alejandro slowly turned toward her.
"Then let's find some."
Every room in the mansion was searched.
At first, nothing seemed unusual.
Then one investigator discovered a hidden lock installed on the outside of a small bedroom door in the servants' wing.
Inside was almost nothing.
A narrow bed.
A worn blanket.
Three books.
A tiny framed wedding photograph hidden beneath the mattress.
Alejandro picked it up with trembling hands.
It was the picture from their honeymoon.
Elena had somehow managed to keep it.
His heart broke.
"You slept here?" he asked.
She nodded.
"For three years."
Another investigator entered carrying a metal box recovered from the basement.
Inside were passports.
Birth certificates.
Medical files.
Elena's passport.
Her driver's license.
Her phone.
Everything that had supposedly disappeared the night she vanished.
Vivian's face turned pale.
"You planted those!"
"No," Elena said quietly.
Her voice was no longer shaking.
"That's where you kept them."
Every servant slowly raised their heads.
For the first time in years, they realized someone was finally listening.
An elderly housekeeper stepped forward.
"My name is Rosa."
She looked directly at Alejandro.
"Mrs. Castillo never disappeared."
Everyone froze.
Rosa continued.
"The night you left for Europe, Mrs. Moretti told us Mrs. Castillo had suffered a mental breakdown."
She swallowed hard.
"She ordered us to say she had run away."
"And if we refused?"
Rosa rolled back her sleeve.
Old scars covered her arm.
"We were reminded what happened to people who disobeyed."
One by one, the servants began speaking.
Each testimony made Vivian's lies collapse a little more.
Then Elena revealed the truth no one expected.
"I tried to escape."
Alejandro looked at her.
"Seven times."
She slowly uncovered another bruise hidden beneath her sleeve.
"She always found me."
The room fell silent again.
Vivian finally screamed.
"She would have ruined everything! She wasn't strong enough to run this family!"
"No," Alejandro replied.
"You were afraid she was."
That evening, police officers arrived with warrants.
As Vivian was placed in handcuffs, she turned toward Elena one last time.
"You think you've won?"
Elena looked directly into her eyes.
"I already have."
May you like
For the first time in three years...
She no longer looked afraid.
