Chapter 2: The Name They Didn’t Expect

The man reached them, stopping just beside Emma.
He looked at the elderly woman first, then at Emma’s trembling hands still holding her upright.
“Ma’am,” he said gently to the older woman, “are you hurt?”
She shook her head weakly. “Just… dizzy.”
“Then you’re coming with me,” he said simply.
Two security staff finally moved in—but not toward Emma. Toward Victoria.
“Sir,” one of them murmured, “should we—”
“Escort Mrs. Langford to the private lounge,” the man interrupted without looking away from Emma. “Now.”
Victoria’s face went pale. “Excuse me? Do you know who I am?”
He finally turned his gaze to her.
“That’s the problem,” he said quietly. “You think it matters more than what you just did.”
A ripple went through the room. Recognition began to surface—whispers, names, disbelief.
Emma didn’t understand any of it. Her knees were giving out. The weight of the moment, the humiliation, the exhaustion—it all crashed down at once.
She would have fallen if the man hadn’t stepped closer and steadied the elderly woman himself.
“You did well,” he said to Emma, softer now. “Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise.”

Her lips parted, but no sound came out.
Because for the first time all night, someone wasn’t looking at her like she was invisible.
