Chapter 17 - The Man in White.

When the side-corridor video appeared, Nora asked technicians to preserve the original file in more than one location.
Ruiz nodded approval.
After days of overwritten cameras, spoofed messages, and missing logs, nobody trusted a single copy anymore.
Evidence survived because people assumed systems could fail.
The prep-corridor footage gave Hargrove a different kind of pain than suspicion had.
Suspicion left a small place for hope.
Video removed it.
Dawson's face was clear.
His movement was deliberate.
There was no misunderstanding about which hand entered the service hatch.
Hargrove watched the clip twice and refused a third viewing.
Dominic's messages changed the emotional center of the case.
Until then, he had existed as image and rumor.
A face on camera.
A ring.
A dead brother's name.
Now he had a voice, even if it arrived through a screen.
His tone was impatient, guilty, and occasionally sarcastic.
Enzo recognized it before police did.
Marcus recognized habits in the punctuation.
Nora recognized something else.
Dominic did not write like someone trying to control every conclusion.
He wrote like someone trying to catch up with damage already happening.
That did not make him trustworthy.
It made him different from the person who had studied Nora's habits and predicted her reactions.
For the first time, she began separating the conspiracy from the secrets surrounding it.
The messages did not make Dominic innocent.
They made him reachable.
Detective Ruiz took Nora's phone and typed a reply with her permission.
PROVE WHO YOU ARE.
The response came almost immediately.
ASK ENZO WHAT I BROKE IN HIS ROOM WHEN I WAS ELEVEN.
Nora looked at Enzo.
He stared at the screen.
"My father's watch."
Another message arrived.
HE BLAMED THE DOG FOR SIX MONTHS.
Enzo's face changed despite himself.
"That's Dominic."
Ruiz remained unimpressed.
"Or someone who knows family stories."
She typed again.
MEET POLICE.
The answer came after a minute.
NOT UNTIL DAWSON IS SECURED.
Ruiz replied.
DAWSON IS WITH VOSS.
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.
The next message was longer.
THEN YOU HAVE LESS TIME THAN YOU THINK.
Nora felt tension move through the room.
Ruiz typed.
WHY?
Dominic answered.
BECAUSE GABRIEL DOES NOT KEEP WITNESSES AFTER THEY STOP BEING USEFUL.
Hargrove looked at Ruiz.
"Dawson is in danger."
"Maybe."
"Voss picked him up."
"We saw that."
"If Dominic is right—"
"Then we find them faster."
Ruiz typed another message.
TELL US WHAT HAPPENED AT 8:07.
This time, Dominic did not answer immediately.
Nora imagined him somewhere in the city, deciding how much truth to release.
When the response came, it arrived in pieces.
I ENTERED THROUGH SERVICE ELEVATOR AT 8:07.
DAWSON HAD ALREADY DISABLED CAMERA.
I FOLLOWED HIM FROM BAR CORRIDOR.
Nora stared at the last line.
Ruiz typed.
WHERE WAS DAWSON?
SIDE SERVICE HATCH.
Hargrove frowned.
"There is no side service hatch."
Nora looked at him.
"Yes, there is."
Everyone turned toward her.
"Not an official one."
"Explain," Ruiz said.
"The mirrored wall behind the sideboard has a narrow catering panel."
Whitcomb, still cooperating remotely, confirmed it.
The panel had been installed years ago so servers could pass plates from a preparation corridor into the room without opening the main service door during speeches.
It was almost never used.
The mirrored surface concealed the seam.
Hargrove looked furious with himself.
"Does security cover the prep corridor?"
"One camera," Whitcomb said.
"Where is the footage?"
"I don't know. Nobody asked for it because the corridor was supposed to be closed during the party."
Ruiz immediately called the Aurelian.
The prep corridor camera existed.
Its footage had not been disabled.
But the recording server kept only forty-eight hours of high-resolution video before compressing it.
They still had time.
Ruiz told technicians to preserve it immediately.
Then she returned to Dominic.
WHAT DID YOU SEE DAWSON DO?
Dominic replied.
HE HAD A GLASS IN HIS HAND.
I THOUGHT HE WAS PLANTING A LISTENING DEVICE OR TAKING SOMETHING.
I COULD NOT SEE LILY FROM THE CORRIDOR.
Nora frowned.
"He says he couldn't see Lily, but Lily saw him."
Ruiz typed the question.
Dominic answered.
I STEPPED INTO MAIN HALL AFTER DAWSON LEFT THE HATCH.
LILY SAW ME THROUGH OPEN SERVICE DOOR.
I SAID HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
I SHOULD NOT HAVE.
Enzo read the message twice.
"Idiot."
Marcus almost smiled.
"That sounds like him."
Another message arrived.
I WANTED TO SEE HER ONCE.
The room went quiet.
Enzo looked away.
Dominic continued.
I DID NOT KNOW HER DRINK HAD BEEN CHANGED.
I SAW DAWSON LEAVE WITH A SMALL BLACK CASE.
THEN I LEFT.
Ruiz typed.
WHY DIDN'T YOU WARN ENZO?
The answer came quickly.
I TRIED.
Hargrove's eyes narrowed.
"How?"
Ruiz typed the question.
A new message appeared.
ASK MARCUS ABOUT THE SILVER CASTLE BAG.
Everyone turned toward Marcus.
He looked confused.
"I don't know anything about the bag."
Dominic sent another message.
THE GIFT WAS MINE.
Enzo stared at the phone.
Nora felt the case twist again.
The castle bag had not been entirely fake.
Ruiz typed.
WHAT WAS INSIDE?
A MOON CHARM AND A NOTE FOR ENZO.
Nora remembered the missing charm.
"What note?"
Dominic answered without being asked.
THE NOTE SAID: WATCH DAWSON. NORTHSTAR IS ACTIVE. DO NOT TRUST INTERNAL SECURITY.
Hargrove swore softly.
Enzo's face darkened.
"I never saw that note."
Nora understood.
Dominic had arranged a private gift as a warning.
Someone intercepted it.
The warning note disappeared.
Dominic's ring box was substituted or repurposed.
Then the box was planted at Ashland to implicate him.
Ruiz typed.
HOW DID YOU DELIVER IT?
Dominic responded.
THROUGH A COURIER AT 5:30.
Ruiz checked the gift delivery log.
No such courier appeared.
The castle bag was absent from the official list.
Somebody had intercepted the delivery before receiving.
Hargrove called building security from that afternoon.
One temporary guard had signed in at 4:00 and left at 7:00.
His name was listed as Aaron Wells.
The security contractor had no employee by that name.
The photograph on the temporary badge was blurred.
Nora looked at the build.
"Dawson?"
Hargrove shook his head.
"Too short."
Ruiz did not guess.
She ordered the exterior footage preserved.
Another Dominic message arrived.
I SENT THE LATER MESSAGES TO NORA.
Nora frowned.
"Which later messages?"
The answer came.
DOMINIC IS A DISTRACTION.
ASK WHO BENEFITS.
ASK MARCUS FIRST.
Nora looked at Ruiz.
"So the messages at the apartment were from him."
"Some of them."
"Not the first threats."
Dominic confirmed without prompting.
I DID NOT SEND YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED INVISIBLE.
I DID NOT SEND THE STRAW WAS NOT YOUR BUSINESS.
Nora felt strangely relieved to separate the voices.
One person had threatened her.
Another had tried to push her toward the truth while refusing to show himself.
She was still angry at both.
Ruiz typed.
WHY USE NORA?
Dominic's answer took longer.
BECAUSE SHE STOPPED THEM FROM DESTROYING THE GLASS.
BECAUSE ENZO LISTENED TO HER.
BECAUSE SHE HAS NO REASON TO PROTECT ANY OF US.
Nora read the words twice.
It was almost exactly what Marcus had concluded.
She was useful because she belonged to no side.
Ruiz typed.
WHERE ARE YOU?
No response.
She tried again.
IF YOU WANT LILY SAFE, HELP US FIND VOSS AND DAWSON.
Still nothing.
Then the Aurelian technician called.
They had preserved the prep corridor footage.
The high-resolution file was damaged around 8:07, but not erased.
Ruiz requested immediate transfer.
Ten minutes later, the video opened on a hospital conference room monitor.
The camera showed a narrow corridor behind the private dining room.
Metal shelving lined one wall.
The concealed catering hatch was visible from this side.
At 8:06:55, the corridor was empty.
At 8:07:18, Daniel Dawson entered.
Nobody spoke.
His face was clear.
No hat.
No disguise.
He carried a tall clear glass in one hand and a black security case in the other.
Hargrove leaned toward the screen.
"That's him."
Dawson set the case down.
He opened the catering hatch.
The camera angle did not show the dining room beyond it.
His right arm disappeared through the opening.
Five seconds.
Six.
Seven.
Then he withdrew his hand.
He was now holding another glass.
This one had a pink-and-white striped straw.
Nora's heart hammered.
"That's Lily's original drink."
Dawson placed it inside the black case.
He closed the hatch.
Then he walked away.
At 8:07:43, another figure entered the corridor from the far end.
White maintenance jacket.
Dark cap.
Silver ring.
Dominic.
He stopped near the hatch.
Looked toward the direction Dawson had gone.
Then looked through the narrow service door into the private room.
He lifted one hand in a small wave.
Five seconds later, he left.
The entire mystery of the white-jacketed man changed in less than a minute of video.
Dominic had been telling the truth about the sequence.
Dawson had swapped the glass.
Ruiz replayed the footage.
"This proves Dawson made the switch."
Hargrove's voice sounded rough.
"Yes."
"It does not prove who prepared the replacement drink or ordered him to do it."
"No."
Enzo stared at Dawson on the screen.
"Gabriel."
Ruiz looked at him.
"Probably isn't enough."
"He picked Dawson up today."
"Still not enough to prove he ordered what happened to Lily."
Nora watched the recording again.
Something about Dawson's movement bothered her.
He did not look rushed.
He knew exactly when everyone would be distracted.
He knew the panel.
He knew the camera was off.
He knew where Lily's glass would be.
This was rehearsal, not improvisation.
Then she saw the black case.
"Pause."
Ruiz stopped the video.
"What?"
Nora pointed at a sticker on the side of the case.
The resolution was good enough to read three letters.
N.S.C.
Northstar Consulting.
The same shell company in her father's files.
The same company paying Dawson now.
Fourteen years apart.
Same name.
Same network.
Ruiz's phone rang.
She answered and immediately stood straighter.
"Where?"
Hargrove looked at her.
Ruiz listened.
"Keep visual contact. Do not approach until units arrive."
She ended the call.
"Traffic cameras found Voss's car."
Enzo stepped forward.
"Where?"
"Heading north on Lake Shore Drive."
"Dawson with him?"
"Passenger matches."
"Where are they going?"
Ruiz looked at the route map on her phone.
"If they stay on that road, there are three likely exits."
Marcus studied it.
Then his face changed.
"Kenosha."
Nora remembered the warehouse photograph.
Dominic outside a motel in Kenosha one week earlier.
Ruiz looked toward Marcus.
"You think Voss is going after Dominic."
May you like
Marcus's voice was grim.
"I think he's going to finish what he started five years ago."
