CHAPTER 1 — The Silence That Followed the Word “Mom”

The airport noise faded into something distant.
All I could hear were three small breaths pressed against me.
“Mom…”
The word still echoed in my chest like it didn’t belong to this world.
I slowly knelt down, my hands resting on their shoulders as if I was afraid they might disappear if I let go.
Blake stood behind them.
Still.
Unmoving.
Like a man who had just been told gravity was optional.
“Emma…” his voice finally came out, low and fractured. “What is this?”
I didn’t look at him.
Not yet.
Because if I did, I wasn’t sure I would stay as calm as I needed to be.
One of the boys—Leo, the boldest one—turned slightly toward him.
“That’s him,” Leo said simply.
The words hit harder than any accusation.
Blake flinched.
“No,” he said immediately. “That’s impossible.”
But his eyes didn’t leave them.
Hazel eyes. Light brown hair. The same set of eyebrows he had when he was younger—before money sharpened everything.
He noticed it.
And that was the moment denial started to crack.
I finally stood.
Slowly.
Carefully.
“You don’t get to say that word anymore,” I said.
“Emma—”
“You left,” I interrupted. My voice was steady, but quiet enough that only he could feel it. “You chose what was ‘impossible’ five years ago.”
A silence stretched between us.
The kind that doesn’t end—it just changes shape.

The boys clung tighter to me.
And Blake Harrington, the man who once controlled entire industries, looked at three children like he was seeing his own reflection for the first time.
