Chapter 8 — The Blue Folder

Chapter 8 — The Blue Folder

Rain tapped softly against the hospital window.
The room had grown quieter.
Not because anyone felt safe.
Because everyone was thinking about the same thing.
The blue folder.
Detective Bennett closed her notebook.
"No one enters that house until the forensic team clears it."
Daniel nodded immediately.
"I'll cooperate."
My mother looked anxious.
"What if someone gets there first?"
"They won't," the detective replied.
"We already have officers outside."
Daniel looked toward me.
"I'll stay here."
"You shouldn't wake up alone."
My mother stood.
"I'll go with the police."
Detective Bennett shook her head.
"I need you here in case we have questions."
"I'll send two investigators."
She spoke into her radio.
Within minutes, confirmation came back.
The officers were already on their way.
The ICU became quiet again.
A nurse adjusted my oxygen.
"Your numbers look much better."
I swallowed carefully.
My throat still burned.
"Can... I... have water?"
She smiled.
"A few ice chips first."
She handed me a small cup.
The cold eased the pain just enough for me to speak.
"Thank you."
Daniel smiled.
"That's the first full sentence you've said."
I managed the smallest smile.
"I've... had... better days."
Even the nurse laughed softly.
For the first time since the ambulance ride, the room felt almost normal.
Almost.
An hour later, Detective Bennett's phone rang.
She answered immediately.
"Bennett."
She listened without interrupting.
Her expression slowly changed.
"What did you find?"
Daniel stood.
"So?"
She lowered the phone.
"The officers located the blue folder."
Everyone released the breath they had been holding.
"But..."
Daniel frowned.
"What now?"
"It wasn't where you said it would be."
My mother looked confused.
"It should've been in the attic."
"It wasn't."
"Then where?"
"It was hidden behind several storage boxes in the basement."
Daniel blinked.
"The basement?"
"We never kept important papers down there."
Detective Bennett nodded.
"Which means someone probably moved it."
Another officer arrived carrying a sealed evidence bag.
Inside was an old blue accordion folder.
Dust still clung to the edges.
Across the front, faded black marker read:
GRANDPA
Daniel recognized it immediately.
"That's it."
The detective carefully opened the folder.
She removed several documents.
Old tax records.
Insurance papers.
Family photographs.
A handwritten birthday card.
Nothing unusual.
Then she reached the bottom.
There was another envelope.
Smaller.
Cream-colored.
Sealed.
My grandfather's handwriting covered the front.
For Emma — Open When You're Ready
My mother gasped.
"I've never seen that."
Daniel slowly shook his head.
"Neither have I."
The detective looked toward me.
"Emma..."
"Did your grandfather ever mention this?"
I swallowed.
"No."
"He only said..."
My voice remained weak.
"...that he'd left me something important."
Daniel looked at the envelope.
"We all assumed he meant the college fund."
"So did I."
Detective Bennett carefully examined the seal.
"It doesn't appear to have been opened."
She looked around the room.
"Since it's addressed to Emma..."
She paused.
"...the decision is hers."
Everyone looked at me.
Even the nurses.
I stared at the envelope.
Part of me wanted to know immediately.
Another part wasn't ready.
After everything that had happened...
It felt overwhelming.
Daniel gently squeezed my hand.
"You don't have to decide right now."
I looked at him.
Then slowly shook my head.
"I... want... to read it."
The detective handed the envelope to Daniel.
"Open it carefully."
He broke the seal.
Inside was a single folded letter.
And something else.
A small brass key.
Daniel unfolded the paper.
My grandfather's familiar handwriting filled the page.
He began reading aloud.
"Dear Emma,
If you're reading this, it means you're finally old enough to make your own decisions.
I'm proud of you.
More than you'll ever know.
The money I left you was never the most important part of my gift.
The real gift is the key enclosed with this letter.
It opens the safe-deposit box I've kept for years.
Inside are family records, legal papers, and letters that belong to you.
Someday they may answer questions none of us can answer today.
Whatever happens, don't let anyone pressure you into giving up what's yours.
Trust people because they earn it.
Not because they're family."
Daniel stopped reading.
The room remained silent.
My mother slowly wiped away another tear.
"He always worried we'd fight over money."
Detective Bennett looked thoughtful.
"Did anyone besides Emma know about this key?"
Daniel answered first.
"I didn't."
My mother shook her head.
"No."
The detective carefully picked up the brass key.
"It may not have anything to do with Emma's illness."
"But we'll document it."
Daniel nodded.
"Fair enough."
Before anyone could say another word...
A knock came at the ICU door.
The doctor stepped inside.
He was smiling.
A genuine smile this time.
"I've got good news."
Everyone immediately stood.
"What happened?" Daniel asked.
He looked at my latest chart.
"Emma's oxygen levels have remained stable for several hours."
My mother clasped her hands together.
"Is she out of danger?"
"She's improving."
"We're planning to move her out of the ICU tomorrow morning if everything continues like this."
Relief washed across the room.
For the first time in two days...
There was real hope.
Then the doctor's pager vibrated.
He glanced down.
The smile faded.
"I'm sorry."
"What is it?" Daniel asked.
The doctor looked toward Detective Bennett.
"The state laboratory just sent another update."
The detective's expression turned serious again.
"They've identified fingerprints on the second vitamin bottle."
Daniel's heart seemed to stop.
"Were they Ray's?"
The detective slowly shook her head.
"No."
My mother whispered,
"Then whose were they?"
Detective Bennett looked directly at me before answering.
"The bottle contains Emma's fingerprints..."
She paused.
"...and one unidentified set."
She closed the report.
"So whoever handled that bottle..."
"...is someone we still haven't identified."
The room fell silent once more.
Outside, the rain grew heavier against the hospital windows.
