Chapter 2 - The Door Beneath the Glass.

Daniel did not sleep.

At 2:13 in the morning, he stood inside his father’s abandoned greenhouse with the brass key pressed into his palm.

Rain ticked softly against the glass roof.

Lily waited in the main house with Evelyn, under the watch of two security officers Daniel had personally hired after verifying their identities through three separate sources.

Vanessa had gone to bed after declaring the entire night ridiculous.

Daniel had not told her Lily was still on the property.

He had not told Adrian about the note.

And he had not told anyone he was entering the archive.

The old greenhouse smelled of cedar frames, damp soil, and years of neglect.

His father had stopped gardening after Daniel’s mother died.

But one corner of the building had always remained locked.

Daniel swept his flashlight across the floor until he found the cedar-tree symbol carved into a brass plate beneath a workbench.

He inserted the key.

A mechanism clicked beneath the stone.

Part of the floor shifted aside.

Cold air rose from a narrow staircase.

Daniel stared down into darkness.

“Of course you built a room under a greenhouse,” he muttered.

His father had never believed in obvious answers.

Daniel descended.

At the bottom, he found a steel door.

The brass key opened that too.

Inside was a room no larger than a hotel suite.

Metal shelves lined three walls.

Old Mercer Holdings ledgers were arranged by year.

There were storage boxes, photographs, legal files, and a small desk with a disconnected computer.

On the desk sat a white envelope.

DANIEL was written across the front.

He opened it.

Son,

If you are here, then Mara was right to be afraid.

Daniel stopped reading.

He looked around the room again.

Mara was right.

His father had known her disappearance might happen.

He continued.

Do not assume the person stealing from you wants money.

Money is only the lever.

Control is the prize.

Find the Falcon accounts.

Ask Evelyn what happened on October 17.

And before you decide what Lily means to this family, find the hospital bracelet.

Daniel read the last sentence twice.

Hospital bracelet.

He opened the nearest box.

Tax returns.

The next contained property deeds.

The third held personal papers from the final years of Richard Mercer’s life.

Daniel searched until dawn began turning the greenhouse roof gray.

He found no bracelet.

He did find Falcon.

The word appeared on a thin file marked PRIVATE AUDIT.

Inside were transaction records showing millions of dollars moving from Mercer subsidiaries into consulting companies Daniel had never heard of.

Falcon Strategy Group.

Falcon River Partners.

Falcon North Consulting.

Every company had different directors.

Every company used the same bank in Delaware.

Daniel photographed each page.

Then he found something worse.

Some transfers dated back five years.

They had begun while Richard Mercer was still alive.

If Adrian had been involved, the theft was not a recent betrayal.

It was an operation.

Daniel heard a creak above him.

He switched off the flashlight.

Footsteps moved across the greenhouse floor.

Slow.

Measured.

One person.

Daniel slid the file under his jacket and moved behind a shelving unit.

The hidden stair door opened.

Light spilled downward.

Someone descended.

Daniel waited.

A figure reached the bottom.

It was Vanessa.

She carried a phone in one hand and a small flashlight in the other.

Daniel could hear her breathing.

She approached the steel door.

It was unlocked because he was inside.

Vanessa entered.

She did not call his name.

She did not look surprised to find the archive open.

Instead, she walked directly toward the desk.

Daniel watched from the shadows.

She opened the second drawer.

Empty.

Then the third.

Her composure cracked.

“No,” she whispered.

She searched faster.

Daniel stepped out.

“Looking for something?”

Vanessa froze.

She turned slowly.

Her face changed from shock to anger within seconds.

“You followed me.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“This is my father’s archive.”

“You had no right to come down here alone.”

“My name is on the envelope.”

Vanessa looked at his jacket.

“What did you find?”

“That is an interesting first question.”

She crossed her arms.

“Daniel, your father was sick.”

“He knew about Falcon.”

The silence between them sharpened.

Vanessa looked away first.

“You should talk to Adrian.”

“You know about Falcon.”

“I know your father accused half the company of stealing from him during his final year.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You want an answer?”

“Here is one.”

“Your father did not trust you to run Mercer Holdings.”

Daniel felt the words land.

“He thought you were sentimental.”

“He thought you confused loyalty with competence.”

“And he thought one day someone would use that weakness to tear the company apart.”

Daniel studied her.

“Is that what you are doing?”

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“After seventeen years, that is what you think of me?”

“After this morning, I don’t know what to think.”

She laughed once, bitterly.

“You saw a stranger by a car, and suddenly I am your enemy.”

“A child told me you sent him.”

“A child whose mother disappeared after stealing from this family.”

Daniel went still.

“You told me Mara resigned.”

Vanessa realized the mistake immediately.

He stepped closer.

“Which was it?”

“Did she resign, or did she steal?”

Vanessa’s mouth tightened.

“I was trying to spare you another household scandal.”

“What did she steal?”

“Documents.”

“What documents?”

“I don’t know.”

“You came straight to this desk looking for something.”

“I knew your father hid things here.”

“What things?”

Vanessa stopped talking.

Daniel took out his phone.

“I think we should continue this conversation with counsel present.”

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“You are making a mistake.”

“Maybe.”

“But it will be my mistake.”

He moved past her toward the stairs.

Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.

The gesture instantly reminded him of Lily outside the car.

But this grip felt entirely different.

“Daniel.”

He turned.

For the first time, fear appeared in Vanessa’s face.

“Do not trust Adrian.”

Daniel stared at her.

“That is exactly what my father said.”

Vanessa released him.

Now it was her turn to look shocked.

Daniel climbed the stairs without another word.

By 7:00 a.m., he was back inside the house.

Evelyn was waiting in the breakfast room.

Lily slept curled beneath a blanket on the sofa.

Daniel placed the Falcon file on the table.

“October seventeenth,” he said.

Evelyn’s face changed.

“My father told me to ask you what happened.”

She sat slowly.

“That was the night Mara disappeared.”

Daniel pulled out a chair.

“Tell me everything.”

Evelyn looked toward Lily before speaking.

“Mara came to me after midnight.”

“She was frightened, but not for herself.”

“She had found bank records hidden inside Vanessa’s office.”

“Falcon accounts?”

Evelyn nodded.

“She said the transfers were connected to a plan involving the board.”

“What plan?”

“She never finished explaining.”

“A car entered the property through the east gate.”

“Mara saw it on the security feed and told me to take Lily upstairs.”

“Then she went to your father’s study.”

“Why?”

“Because your father was waiting for her.”

Daniel’s pulse quickened.

“Was Adrian here?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with uncertainty.

“I saw his car.”

“But I never saw him.”

“What happened to Mara?”

“By morning, she was gone.”

“And your father ordered me never to ask questions where Vanessa could hear.”

Daniel looked toward the sleeping child.

“Why did Lily come back now?”

Evelyn reached into her pocket and removed a second object.

A hospital bracelet.

Daniel forgot to breathe.

The plastic band was yellowed with age.

The printed name was still visible.

INFANT CARTER, LILY.

Under the patient information was an emergency contact.

RICHARD MERCER.

Daniel looked up.

Evelyn’s voice dropped.

“Your father paid every medical bill from the day Lily was born.”

Daniel stared at the bracelet.

“Why?”

Evelyn swallowed.

“Because Mara told him Lily was his daughter.”

Daniel looked at the sleeping ten-year-old girl.

The room seemed to shrink around him.

“That would make her…”

“Your sister,” Evelyn whispered.

Before Daniel could respond, his phone rang.

Adrian Vale.

Daniel answered without speaking.

Adrian’s voice came fast and tight.

“Daniel, I need you out of the house now.”

“Why?”

“Because Vanessa just called an emergency board meeting.”

Daniel stood.

“For what?”

May you like

Adrian hesitated.

“To remove you as CEO.”
