Chapter 2 - The Name Beneath the Jade.

The ballroom doors closed behind the security guards, trapping Vanessa inside the building with the rest of the Vale family.
Daniel ordered the band to stop, asked the guests to remain seated, and told the wedding coordinator to clear the private library beside the ballroom.
No one argued with him.
For the first time that afternoon, he sounded exactly like Eleanor.
Maya walked toward the library with one hand holding the torn back of her gown together and the other wrapped around the jade pendant.
She could feel hundreds of eyes following her.
Eleanor walked three steps behind her.
That distance felt larger than twenty-three years.
Inside the library, Daniel locked the door.
Vanessa stood near the fireplace with her arms folded.
Eleanor remained by the window.
Maya sat on the edge of a leather chair because her knees had begun to shake.
Daniel removed his tuxedo jacket and draped it around her shoulders.
"We can leave," he said.
"Right now."
Maya looked at the pendant.
"If I leave, I spend the rest of my life wondering."
Daniel nodded once.
"Then we stay until you have answers."
Eleanor turned toward them.
"You should have had answers years ago."
Maya lifted her eyes.
"From whom?"
Eleanor swallowed.
"From me, if I had known you were alive."
Vanessa exhaled sharply.
"We do not know that she is Lena."
Maya looked at her.
"You seemed pretty interested in leaving before anyone could find out."
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
"I was trying to protect my sister from another breakdown."
Eleanor went very still.
"Another?"
Vanessa realized the word had escaped too quickly.
"You know what I mean."
"Say it."
"After Lena disappeared, you barely slept for a year."
Vanessa's tone became clinical, almost managerial.
"You accused staff, neighbors, police officers, reporters, and even Jonathan."
Eleanor's face hardened at the mention of her late husband.
Maya noticed.
"Why your husband?"
Eleanor looked away.
"Because grief makes suspicion easy."
Vanessa gave a small, humorless smile.
"Exactly."
Daniel stepped between the sisters before the argument could widen.
"We need facts."
He pointed toward the jade.
"Start there."
Eleanor drew a slow breath.
"My mother commissioned two jade pendants when Lena was born."
Maya looked down.
"Two?"
"One for Lena and one for me."
Eleanor touched the bare place beneath her diamond necklace.
"Mine was stolen from my bedroom three days after she disappeared."
Vanessa's eyes moved toward the floor.
Maya caught it.
"Did the police know?"
"Yes."
"Did they think the same person took both?"
"They assumed so."
"And you never found yours?"
Eleanor shook her head.
"No."
Daniel leaned against the desk.
"What was inside them?"
"The initials."
Eleanor looked at Maya's pendant.
"L.V. in hers."
"And yours?"
"E.V."
Maya opened the hidden panel again.
The tiny letters looked impossible now that she knew what they meant.
"Alice never showed me this."
Eleanor's expression sharpened.
"Alice?"
"Alice Chen."
"The woman who raised you?"
Maya nodded.
Eleanor stepped closer.
"What did she look like?"
Maya took out her phone.
Her hands trembled as she searched through an old album.
She found a photograph taken at her high school graduation.
Alice stood beside her in a pale blue dress, smiling with one hand on Maya's shoulder.
Maya held out the phone.
Eleanor stared at the screen.
All the color left her face for the second time that day.
"Alice Wu."
Maya frowned.
"Her last name was Chen."
"Not when she worked for us."
Eleanor took the phone without asking.
"She was Lena's nanny."
Silence filled the library.
Daniel straightened.
Vanessa closed her eyes for one brief second.
Maya stood.
"No."
Eleanor enlarged the photograph.
"She cut her hair."
Her finger hovered above the screen.
"She was younger, but this is her."
Maya felt the floor disappear beneath her again.
"You are saying my mother kidnapped me?"
"I'm saying Alice disappeared the same day Lena did."
"That isn't the same thing."
"The police believed she took her."
Maya snatched the phone back.
"Alice was not a kidnapper."
Vanessa finally spoke.
"You were a child."
Maya turned on her.
"And you were there."
Vanessa's expression did not change.
"Yes."
"So tell me what happened."
Vanessa glanced at Eleanor.
"It was a charity luncheon at the Vale estate."
"That is not what I asked."
Maya's voice sharpened.
"Tell me what happened to the little girl."
Eleanor answered instead.
"Lena was playing in the east garden."
Her voice had dropped into the rhythm of an old memory repeated too many times.
"Alice was with her."
"There were almost two hundred people on the property."
"Security cameras covered the front gate, but not the service road behind the greenhouse."
"At 2:17 in the afternoon, Alice and Lena vanished."
Maya listened without blinking.
"A groundskeeper later said he saw a gray sedan on the service road."
Eleanor continued.
"Police found the sedan abandoned outside Reno four days later."
"There was blood in the back seat."
Maya's breath caught.
"Whose?"
"They could not establish it with certainty at the time."
"No body?"
"No."
"Then why did everyone decide she was dead?"
Eleanor's eyes darkened.
"Six months later, a private investigator found a child's dress in a burned storage unit in Nevada."
"It was the dress Lena wore that day."
Maya stared at her.
"Who hired the investigator?"
The room changed.
Eleanor's eyes moved slowly toward Vanessa.
Vanessa did not move.
Maya followed the look.
"She did?"
Vanessa lifted her chin.
"Eleanor could barely function."
"Jonathan was consumed by the police investigation."
"I hired someone because I wanted my niece home."
Eleanor's voice became very quiet.
"His name was Peter Lang."
Daniel frowned.
"I've heard that name."
"You should have."
Eleanor looked at Vanessa.
"He became Vale Meridian's head of corporate security two years later."
Vanessa's composure finally cracked.
"He was good at his job."
"Or useful to you?"
Eleanor asked.
Vanessa stepped away from the fireplace.
"This is getting ridiculous."
Maya held up the pendant.
"A missing child is standing in front of you wearing the one object that disappeared with her, and the nanny accused of taking her is the woman who raised her."
"Nothing about this is ridiculous."
Daniel moved toward the desk phone.
"We need a DNA test."
Eleanor nodded immediately.
Maya hesitated.
The word DNA made the possibility real in a way the pendant had not.
A necklace could be stolen.
A photograph could be misidentified.
A scar could be coincidence.
DNA could close the door forever.
Daniel read the fear on her face.
"Only if you want it."
Maya looked at Eleanor.
The older woman had spent two years making it clear that Maya would never be enough for her son.
Now she looked as if Maya's answer might determine whether she remained standing.
"I want it," Maya said.
Eleanor closed her eyes.
A tear finally escaped.
Vanessa turned toward the window.
Daniel called a private medical service used by the family and requested an emergency relationship test with chain-of-custody documentation.
While he spoke, Maya noticed Vanessa typing on her phone.
"Who are you messaging?"
Vanessa immediately locked the screen.
"My assistant."
"Show me."
Vanessa laughed once.
"You do not get to interrogate me because Eleanor saw a piece of jewelry."
Maya stepped closer.
"Then leave your phone on the desk."
Vanessa's expression cooled.
"No."
Daniel ended the call.
"Security will hold everyone who had access to the service corridor until we understand what happened."
Vanessa looked at him with genuine surprise.
"You cannot detain wedding guests."
"I can ask security to preserve video and request that key family members remain until police arrive."
"Police?"
"A twenty-three-year-old missing-child case may have just reopened."
Vanessa's face stiffened.
"Daniel, think carefully."
"I am."
Maya saw something then.
Vanessa was not afraid of scandal.
She had managed billion-dollar earnings calls during lawsuits and federal audits without blinking.
She was afraid of investigation.
A knock sounded at the library door.
The head of hotel security entered with a sealed envelope.
"Mr. Vale, this was found beneath Ms. Zhao's chair in the ballroom."
Vanessa went pale.
Daniel opened the envelope.
Inside was an old photograph folded in half.
He unfolded it on the desk.
The image showed two young Asian women standing beside a swimming pool more than twenty years earlier.
One was Eleanor.
The other was Vanessa.
Between them stood a toddler wearing a white dress.
Around the child's neck was the jade pendant.
Someone had written five words across the back in black ink.
ASK VANESSA ABOUT THE SECOND CAR.
No one spoke.
Vanessa stared at the message.
Then she looked toward the locked door.
"Who put that there?"
Maya watched her carefully.
"Maybe someone who was at the estate that day."
May you like
Vanessa's voice fell to a whisper.
"That person is supposed to be dead."
