Chapter 8 - Nora's Silence.

Nora Bell refused to go to the hospital until she had spoken to Ryan.

Detective Ortiz objected.

Nora insisted.

They met in the back of an ambulance parked outside Kensington House while a paramedic checked the bruising around Nora's wrist.

She looked smaller than Ryan remembered.

Her dark hair, normally pinned neatly at the nape of her neck, hung loose around her face.

She wore the same navy coat seen on office security footage that morning.

One sleeve was torn near the cuff.

Ryan sat opposite her.

Maya sat beside him.

Nora looked at Maya first.

"I'm sorry."

Maya did not respond immediately.

"For what part?"

Nora closed her eyes.

"For delivering the packet to Dr. Harlan."

"For not asking enough questions."

"For knowing Mrs. Whitmore was collecting information about you and telling myself it wasn't my business."

Ryan felt anger rise, but Maya spoke first.

"Did you steal my therapy records?"

Nora's eyes opened.

"No."

"I swear to you, no."

"Then who did?"

"I don't know."

Maya stared at her.

Nora's voice shook.

"Mrs. Whitmore gave me a sealed envelope and told me to take it to Dr. Harlan."

"I thought it was medical paperwork."

"I knew it was about you."

"I did not know it contained private therapy notes."

Ryan leaned forward.

"Why did you run this morning?"

Nora looked toward the ambulance doors.

"Because Malcolm came to the office."

Ryan went still.

"Pierce?"

Nora nodded.

"He arrived before seven."

"Mrs. Whitmore had called him from the police station."

Ortiz, standing just outside, stepped closer.

"How do you know that?"

"He told me."

"He was furious about the camera."

"He kept asking who knew the login information."

Maya's hands tightened together.

"Did he delete the video?"

Nora looked terrified.

"I don't know."

"But he asked me to open Evelyn's office."

"Then he told me to leave."

Ryan's voice hardened.

"And you left him alone with her computer?"

Nora flinched.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I have worked for your mother for eighteen years."

The answer sounded weak until Nora continued.

"And for eighteen years, I watched what happened to people who refused her."

Ryan thought of Arthur's box.

Nora looked at him directly.

"Your mother doesn't fire people when she's angry."

"She ruins the reason anyone else would hire them."

"She doesn't argue with relatives."

"She finds the one secret they can't afford to have repeated."

"And Malcolm makes everything look lawful after she's done."

Maya's face sharpened.

"You knew he helped her."

Nora nodded.

"I knew he cleaned things up."

"I didn't know how far he would go."

Ryan pointed toward the old house around them.

"How did you end up locked here?"

Nora's lower lip trembled.

"When I left the office, Malcolm followed me to the garage."

"He said Evelyn believed the police would pressure me."

"He told me I needed to stay somewhere private until the situation settled."

"I refused."

"Then he said my daughter could lose her business loan if I became disloyal."

Maya whispered, "Jesus."

Nora continued.

"I drove home."

"A car was waiting outside."

"A man I didn't know told me Mrs. Whitmore wanted to speak to me at Kensington House."

"I should have called the police."

"Instead I came here because part of me still believed I could explain myself to her."

Ryan looked around the ambulance.

"Was she here?"

"No."

"The man took my phone."

"He told me to wait upstairs."

"Then he locked the door."

"I heard him leave."

Ortiz's expression hardened.

"Can you describe him?"

Nora nodded.

The description did not match Malcolm.

It matched a younger man with a shaved head and a scar beside his left ear.

Ryan did not recognize him.

Ortiz wrote rapidly.

"What is the blue ledger?" Ryan asked.

Nora gave a tired smile.

"I knew police would search the office eventually."

"The ledger is the only thing Mrs. Whitmore never let Malcolm touch."

"She said handwritten books couldn't be hacked."

Maya looked at Nora.

"What does K-17 contingency mean?"

Nora stared toward the old house.

"Kensington."

"She paid for the property to be cleaned and stocked yesterday."

"Stocked for what?"

Nora hesitated.

"A child."

Ryan's blood went cold.

"What?"

"There were new clothes delivered."

"Size three and four."

"Children's cereal."

"A booster seat."

"A night-light."

Maya covered her mouth.

Ryan stood so quickly the ambulance shifted beneath him.

"She planned to bring Oliver here."

Nora looked ashamed.

"I think so."

The purpose of Scenario B became clear.

If Maya signed temporary guardianship, Evelyn could remove Oliver immediately.

If Maya was taken for psychiatric evaluation under Scenario A, Evelyn could petition for emergency placement.

Kensington House had been prepared for either outcome.

Maya's voice cracked.

"She packed a house for my son before she came to take his inhaler."

Nora began crying silently.

"I'm sorry."

Maya looked at her with a fury so controlled it was almost colder than Evelyn's.

"Stop apologizing and tell the truth."

Nora wiped her face.

"I will."

Ortiz asked the question Ryan had been avoiding.

"Who had access to Mrs. Whitmore's camera account besides her?"

Nora looked at Ryan.

"Malcolm."

"Anyone else?"

"Conrad Vale."

Arthur's private investigator.

Ryan felt the past close around the present.

"Vale is still working for her?"

"Yes."

"He installed the nursery camera."

Maya stared at Nora.

"When?"

"Two weeks ago."

"How did he get into our house?"

Nora looked down.

"I gave him a service key."

Ryan clenched his jaw.

Nora rushed on.

"Mrs. Whitmore told me Ryan had approved it."

"She showed me an email."

Ryan's voice went flat.

"What email?"

Nora described a message carrying Ryan's name and company signature.

It authorized installation of a nursery safety camera due to Oliver's respiratory condition.

Ryan had never sent it.

Ortiz looked at him.

"We need that email."

"It should be in Evelyn's archive," Nora said.

"Unless Malcolm deleted it."

The wiped tablet suddenly mattered even more.

If someone had used Ryan's account to authorize surveillance, the same person could have created a trail making him appear part of the custody plan.

Nora reached for Ryan's wrist.

"There's something else."

Ryan looked at her hand, then at her face.

"Mrs. Whitmore asked me to prepare an envelope last week."

"It was addressed to the family court clerk."

"I didn't see everything inside."

"But one page had your signature."

Ryan felt the air leave his lungs.

"My signature on what?"

Nora's eyes filled with fear.

"A statement saying you were concerned about Maya's mental health."

Maya turned slowly toward Ryan.

Ryan shook his head immediately.

"I never signed anything."

Nora nodded.

"I believe you."

"But if that paper was filed before the nursery incident, then your mother didn't just prepare to take Oliver from Maya."

Nora looked at him with terrible certainty.

"She prepared to make it look like you asked her to."
