CHAPTER 2: The Secret Emma Had Been Carrying

Emma clutched Pastor Williams' hand.
Her tiny body trembled.
"I saw Grandma that night."
Trevor knelt beside her.
"Emma, sweetheart, what are you talking about?"
She looked at him innocently.
"The night before Noah and Nathan got sick."
Everyone was listening now.
Emma pointed directly at Patricia.
"She came into the kitchen after Mommy went upstairs."
Patricia screamed.
"She's a child! She doesn't know what she's saying!"
Emma kept talking.
"Grandma had white powder."
My blood ran cold.
"She put it in bottles that looked exactly like Mommy's bottles."
Trevor slowly stood up.
His face drained of color.
Emma continued.
"She was talking on the phone."
Emma mimicked Patricia's voice.
"'I'll fix everything. Trevor deserves a better life than being trapped by those children and that woman.'"
People in the church began whispering.
Patricia suddenly lunged forward.
"She's lying!"
Pastor Williams stepped between her and Emma.
"Do not touch her."
Emma started crying.
"Grandma gave me cookies and said it was a secret."
I dropped to my knees.
"Oh my God."
Emma looked at me.
"I'm sorry, Mommy. Grandma said she was helping."
Pastor Williams immediately spoke.
"Someone call the police."
Patricia suddenly panicked.
She rushed toward the church doors.
Several family members blocked her path.
Then something inside her broke.
She exploded.
"They were ruining everything!"
She pointed at me.
"Trevor was supposed to have a successful life!"
She pointed at the coffins.
"Those babies trapped him forever!"
The room erupted into chaos.
Trevor stared at his mother as if he were seeing a stranger.
"Mom… what did you do?"
Patricia laughed hysterically.

Then she said the words that destroyed her forever.
"I saved you."
