CHAPTER 2: THE DAUGHTER WHO NEVER DIED

The room exploded with whispers.
"What does that mean?"
"Who is the daughter?"
"Oh my God…"
Evelyn immediately reached for the photo.
"Give it back."
Her voice trembled.
I'd never heard Evelyn sound afraid before.
I slowly stepped backward.
"No."
Andrew stood frozen between us.
"Mom… what is this?"
She swallowed hard.
"Nothing."
I stared at her.
"Nothing? You slapped me in front of everyone because you said I was exposing family secrets."
I held up the Polaroid.
"And now I find this?"
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then an elderly man stood up from the back row.
Grandfather Henry Whitmore.
Evelyn's eighty-six-year-old father.
His voice was weak.
"Enough."
Everyone turned.
He closed his eyes.
"Tell them the truth."
Evelyn looked devastated.
Tears suddenly filled her eyes.
Twenty-seven years ago, before she became Mrs. Whitmore, she was a struggling twenty-year-old woman living in Chicago.
She had fallen in love with a musician.
They had a baby girl.
But the musician abandoned her.
Evelyn was broke, terrified, and desperate.
When wealthy businessman Robert Whitmore proposed marriage, he gave her one condition.
No child.
No baggage.
No past.
So Evelyn made a decision that haunted her for decades.
She placed her daughter up for adoption.
Then she buried every trace of her existence.
Years later, she had Andrew.
She convinced herself the old life no longer existed.
Until now.
Andrew looked horrified.
"You abandoned my sister?"
Evelyn broke down completely.
"I was young… and scared."
But that wasn't the worst part.
I turned over another photo.
And suddenly my hands started shaking.
Because the woman standing next to Evelyn's daughter looked familiar.
Very familiar.
It was my mother.
I looked up in disbelief.
"No way…"
Then it hit me.
My mother had worked for an adoption agency.
My entire body went cold.
I pulled out my phone and dialed her immediately.
She answered after one ring.
"Mom… did you know Evelyn Whitmore before I was born?"
Silence.
Ten seconds of silence.
Then she whispered:
"Oh God."
Everyone in the room listened.
Then she said the words nobody expected.
"Claire… Evelyn's daughter grew up with you."
My breath vanished.
May you like
"What?"
"You've known her your entire life."
