Chapter 13 - The Woman Who Finally Broke.

Naomi refused Tessa's condition within thirty seconds.
"You are not meeting a frightened witness alone."
Evelyn held the motel phone between them.
Tessa could hear every word.
"I do not trust police," Tessa said.
Naomi leaned closer.
"You called a woman you falsely accused of felony theft and demanded she arrange your surrender."
"I know."
"That is not a strong opening position."
"I know."
"Then give me one reason not to hang up."
Tessa was silent for several seconds.
"Because I ordered the replica necklace."
The room went still.
Evelyn's grip tightened around the receiver.
Naomi sat down.
"Say that again."
"Celeste told me to order a duplicate of the Beaumont necklace from Verdan Atelier."
"When?"
"September."
"Why?"
"She said she wanted a travel copy."
"Did you believe her?"
"At first."
"And later?"
Tessa began crying.
"Later I knew."
Naomi's voice remained firm.
"Where are you?"
"I need Evelyn to promise she will be there."
Evelyn looked at Naomi.
Naomi shook her head.
Evelyn spoke anyway.
"If police agree to a safe surrender, I will be nearby."
Naomi stared at her.
Tessa exhaled.
"St. Agnes Church on Forty-Third."
"What time?"
"Forty minutes."
"Do not leave."
"I will not."
The surrender took place in a side chapel under the eyes of Detective Han, two uniformed officers, Naomi, and Evelyn.
Tessa asked for ten minutes to call the care facility where her mother lived before the formal interview began.
Han allowed the call on speaker with her attorney present.
Tessa told the facility administrator that the foundation might stop paying and asked them not to discharge her mother without contacting a social worker.
Her voice broke on the word discharge.
Evelyn listened from across the room.
For the first time, she understood the exact shape of the chain Celeste had wrapped around Tessa.
Understanding did not become forgiveness.
It simply made the crime uglier.
Celeste had found two mothers with limited money and used one woman's fear for her mother to destroy another woman's security for her child.
Power had moved downward until the people with the least room to fall were pushed against each other.
Evelyn did not speak to Tessa until police had searched her for weapons and confirmed she was alone.
Tessa looked nothing like the polished assistant from the Beaumont party.
Her dark hair was unwashed and tied back.
There were shadows beneath her eyes.
She wore the same black coat from Union Station.
When she saw Evelyn, she began crying before anyone said a word.
"I am sorry."
Evelyn felt no urge to comfort her.
"You told police I stole from Celeste."
"I know."
"You watched them take me away from my daughter."
"I know."
"You helped put that necklace in my cart."
Tessa looked down.
"Yes."
The word was almost inaudible.
Evelyn wanted to scream.
Instead, her voice became quieter.
"Tell them everything."
At the station, Tessa gave a recorded statement with a public defender present.
She began with the replica.
Celeste had asked her to commission it using a foundation executive card under the name C. Arden.
Tessa was told it would be used when Celeste traveled to high-risk events.
When the replica arrived, Celeste kept it in a locked drawer in her private dressing room.
Two weeks later, Tessa learned the real necklace had been taken to Switzerland by Adrian Voss.
"How did you learn that?" Han asked.
"I saw the insurance transit document on Celeste's desk."
"What did she say?"
"She said the foundation needed temporary liquidity."
"Meaning?"
"She said Adrian had moved money for an investment and they needed collateral until it came back."
"Did the money come back?"
Tessa shook her head.
"No."
"What happened instead?"
"They created invoices."
"For Arden Cultural Consulting?"
"Yes."
Tessa explained that Arden was controlled by Adrian Voss through intermediaries.
Foundation funds were routed through the consulting company and then dispersed among foreign accounts.
Some money covered earlier missing transfers.
Some financed Celeste's private expenses.
Some, Tessa believed, went directly to Voss.
"How much?" Han asked.
"I do not know."
"Millions?"
"Yes."
"Why keep records?"
"Celeste did not trust Adrian."
"So she kept copies of their fraud?" Naomi asked.
"She kept leverage."
The December ledger was dangerous because it contained a direct transfer requiring both Celeste's and Voss's authorization.
The physical book also referenced the source documents investigators could use to reconstruct other transactions.
Mason was scheduled to review year-end accounts on December 20.
Celeste discovered that fact three days before the party.
Then Evelyn overheard the phone call.
Han looked toward Evelyn.
"What happened after Celeste saw her?"
Tessa wiped her face.
"She called me."
"What did she say?"
"She said Evelyn had been listening."
"Did she know what Evelyn heard?"
"No."
"She panicked."
"What did she ask you to do?"
"Get the duplicate necklace."
Evelyn's stomach turned.
Tessa continued.
"The plan was not supposed to be this big."
Naomi's expression hardened.
"What was it supposed to be?"
"Celeste wanted the replica found in Evelyn's cart."
"She thought Mason would fire Evelyn immediately."
"She thought Evelyn would leave before anyone listened to her."
Evelyn stared at Tessa.
"And if I was arrested?"
Tessa's face crumpled.
"She said that would make it easier."
The room went silent.
Han asked about the night of the party.
At seven thirty-six, Celeste used her current staff key to enter the west service hall.
She carried the replica inside one of her dark blue jewelry pouches.
She placed the pouch beneath the towels in Evelyn's cart.
Lily saw her.
Celeste noticed Lily on the stairs and told her to be quiet.
Then Celeste returned to the ballroom.
At seven forty-two, while Celeste gave her charity toast, Tessa used the old key Celeste had falsely reported lost.
Her job was to remove the identifiable velvet pouch and leave the replica loose beneath the towels.
"Why?" Han asked.
"Because the pouch had Celeste's initials embossed inside."
"What did you do with it?"
"I tried to send it down the old dumbwaiter with shredded ledger pages."
"It caught on the track."
"The torn velvet," Han said.
Tessa nodded.
"And the lipstick?"
Tessa looked embarrassed.
"Celeste had kissed the pouch earlier when she was testing a stain remover on velvet."
Naomi gave her a skeptical look.
Tessa shook her head.
"I know how that sounds."
"Very strange."
"It happened."
The exact origin of the lipstick mattered less than the fibers and embossed fragment later recovered from the dumbwaiter track.
Tessa admitted deleting the main access logs from an administrator terminal.
She admitted giving police a false statement about Evelyn leaving the dressing room.
She admitted saying Evelyn had asked about the safe.
"Why did you agree?" Evelyn asked.
Tessa looked at her for a long time.
"My mother has multiple sclerosis."
Evelyn said nothing.
"The foundation pays for a private care program insurance would not cover."
"Celeste arranged it two years ago."
"She told me if I refused, the funding would stop."
Evelyn thought of Lily's medicine.
For one dangerous second, sympathy tried to enter the room.
Then she remembered Lily screaming as police took her away.
"You still had a choice."
Tessa nodded.
"I know."
"You chose my daughter instead of your mother."
Tessa closed her eyes.
"Yes."
Evelyn stood and walked to the far wall because she could not look at her anymore.
Han asked about Adrian Voss.
Tessa's fear returned immediately.
"He sent the message to Mason."
"How do you know?"
"He called me after I ran."
"What did he say?"
"He said if I went to police, my mother would lose more than medical care."
Han's face hardened.
"Did he threaten to harm her?"
"Yes."
"Was the man at Union Station Voss?"
"Yes."
"Why did you run if police were there?"
"Because Adrian told me he had people inside the foundation, the police, everywhere."
"Did you believe him?"
"I believed enough of him."
Naomi asked about the real necklace.
Tessa shook her head.
"I never saw it after November."
"Who has it?"
"Adrian arranged the sale."
"To whom?"
"A Geneva collector."
"Name?"
"I do not know."
"Did Celeste receive money?"
"Yes."
"How much?"
"Just over one million."
"Where did it go?"
Tessa looked at the table.
"Into the foundation account for eleven days."
Mason, listening from the observation room, stared at her through the glass.
Then the money was transferred back out through Arden.
The necklace sale had not solved the missing money.
It had temporarily disguised it until the year-end review.
Celeste needed more time.
Evelyn's accidental eavesdropping destroyed that time.
That was why a maid with grocery coupons had suddenly become dangerous to people moving millions of dollars.
At the end of Tessa's statement, Han asked one final question.
"Where is the rest of the December ledger?"
Tessa swallowed.
"I gave it to Adrian."
"When?"
"The night of the party."
"Where?"
"In the basement corridor."
"What did he do with it?"
"He put it inside a black document case."
"Where is that case now?"
Tessa hesitated.
"I think Celeste has it."
Mason stepped into the interview room before anyone could stop him.
"Why?"
Tessa flinched.
"Because Adrian called her from the airport garage."
"What did he say?"
Tessa looked at Mason.
"He said he was leaving."
"And?"
May you like
"He said if she wanted to survive this, she needed to burn the last book before dawn."
