Chapter 2: Silence Has a Price

Chapter 2: Silence Has a Price

Andrew finally found his voice.

"You never told me any of this."

Clara smiled faintly.

"I tried."

Memories flooded back.

Late nights when she wanted to discuss budgets.

Phone calls interrupted because his mother "needed him."

Business dinners he skipped because Patricia insisted Clara was "too ambitious."

Every conversation had ended exactly the same.

"Maybe later."

"There isn't time."

"My mother comes first."

Now there was nothing left to postpone.

Victor quietly handed Clara another envelope.

She opened it.

Inside lay several signed contracts.

"The Whitlock family investment proposal has officially been withdrawn."

Andrew froze.

"What?"

Victor answered.

"Rosemont Estate was also negotiating a luxury partnership with Whitlock Developments."

Patricia's face turned pale.

"That project represents almost sixty percent of our expansion."

"It represented," Victor corrected politely.

"The owner declined to proceed."

Andrew looked desperately at Clara.

"You canceled everything?"

"No."

"You did."

He stared.

"When your mother tore my dress..."

Clara glanced down at the ripped lace.

"...you stood beside her."

She took one slow breath.

"Not beside your wife."

"Beside the person hurting her."

He reached for her hand.

"I'm sorry."

She stepped back.

"For which part?"

He couldn't answer.

"For asking me to apologize?"

Silence.

"For watching me be humiliated?"

More silence.

"For spending three years pretending neutrality while your mother made every decision in our relationship?"

His shoulders dropped.

The truth required no defense.

Across the ballroom, several guests quietly stood.

One after another.

Business partners.

Family friends.

Community leaders.

Instead of approaching Andrew...

They walked toward Clara.

Some thanked her for the foundation.

Others offered additional donations.

One pediatric surgeon pledged an entire year of volunteer work.

The wedding reception slowly transformed into a fundraising gala.

Without a single announcement.

May you like

Without a single speech.

Because everyone had already decided who deserved their respect.
