Chapter 2: The Truth Buried Beneath the Whitfield Fortune

Chapter 2: The Truth Buried Beneath the Whitfield Fortune

Caleb didn't wait for anyone's permission.

He scooped Amelia into his arms as gently as if she were made of glass.

"Call an ambulance!" he shouted.

The servants, who had spent years obeying Eleanor without question, finally sprang into action.

Within minutes, flashing red and blue lights reflected across the marble floors of the Whitfield estate.

The emergency room was painfully quiet.

Caleb refused to let go of Amelia's hand.

Every few seconds, his eyes drifted toward the operating room doors.

When the doctor finally emerged, Caleb jumped to his feet.

"Your wife has a concussion, several bruised ribs, and a fractured wrist," the doctor explained.

Caleb's heart nearly stopped.

"And the baby?"

The doctor smiled gently.

"Thankfully, the baby is alive. She protected her abdomen during the fall. It's a miracle."

Caleb closed his eyes in relief before quietly breaking down.

Back at the Whitfield mansion...

Eleanor paced across the living room.

"They're exaggerating," she muttered.

"It wasn't that serious."

Her husband, Richard Whitfield, finally spoke after nearly an hour of silence.

"You pushed a pregnant woman."

Eleanor glared at him.

"I protected this family."

Richard looked exhausted.

"No."

"You protected your pride."

Before Eleanor could respond, the front door opened again.

Three black SUVs stopped outside.

Men in dark suits stepped inside.

Standing between them was Mayor Jonathan Hayes.

The moment Eleanor recognized him, every ounce of color disappeared from her face.

He wasn't smiling.

"I came to see my daughter."

The room froze.

Richard swallowed hard.

"Daughter?"

Jonathan's eyes locked onto Eleanor.

"You must be Mrs. Whitfield."

She forced a weak smile.

"I...I didn't know Amelia was—"

"No."

"You never asked."

The mayor slowly removed a folder from his briefcase.

Inside were copies of financial transfers worth nearly eighteen million dollars.

Every payment had one name attached.

Amelia Hayes.

Jonathan placed the papers on the coffee table.

"My daughter secretly paid your family's debts."

"She refinanced your factories."

"She covered your payroll."

"She personally guaranteed your business loans."

Richard stared at the documents in disbelief.

Every signature belonged to Amelia.

Every date matched the months Caleb's company had somehow survived financial collapse.

Eleanor's knees nearly gave out.

Jonathan's voice became even colder.

"Without her..."

"The Whitfield family would've gone bankrupt two years ago."

That night...

Caleb finally told the truth.

Years earlier, the Whitfield empire had been drowning in debt.

Bad investments.

Corrupt executives.

Hidden tax penalties.

Everything was collapsing.

Caleb had prepared to sell the company.

Amelia had stopped him.

She never wanted recognition.

She only asked for one promise.

"Never tell your mother."

"I don't want her kindness toward me to come from money."

Caleb looked toward the hospital window.

"I wanted Mom to love Amelia for who she was."

Instead...

She hated her for exactly that.

But the biggest secret still hadn't been uncovered.

Because someone inside the Whitfield family had caused the financial collapse on purpose.

And every clue pointed toward Eleanor herself.
