chap 1 Clara nodded, still trying to process the name.

Clara nodded, still trying to process the name.

"I had an interview at Whitmore Capital this morning," she admitted softly.

Ethan's expression changed immediately.

"The Operations Assistant position?"

"Yes."

He glanced instinctively at his watch.

8:34 a.m.

Then back at the résumé folder in her hands.

"You were... the candidate who called HR."

Clara gave a small, embarrassed smile.

"I suppose I'm also the candidate who never showed up."

For a brief moment, neither of them spoke.

Ethan looked toward his daughter, who still clung tightly to his hand.

Then back to Clara.

"You missed the interview because of Lily."

"I made the choice," Clara replied. "No one forced me."

"You could have left her with someone."

"I could have."

"But you didn't."

"No."

Clara took a slow breath.

"I've spent my whole life wishing that more people would stop when someone needed help. I couldn't become the kind of person I always hoped would exist."

Ethan studied her carefully.

During twenty years of building Whitmore Capital into one of Chicago's fastest-growing investment firms, he had interviewed thousands of candidates.

Every résumé claimed integrity.

Every cover letter promised compassion.

Every interview featured carefully rehearsed answers about teamwork and leadership.

But this woman hadn't rehearsed today.

She had lived it.
