Chapter 2: The Interview That Was Never Meant to Be

Chapter 2: The Interview That Was Never Meant to Be
Ethan Whitmore stared at Clara for several long seconds.
"The Clara Bennett?" he asked quietly.
She nodded, suddenly feeling painfully aware of the wrinkled hem of her navy dress and the résumé folder that had become completely useless.
"I had an interview at Whitmore Capital this morning."
Lily looked from her father to Clara.
"Daddy, she's the lady who stayed with me. She didn't even leave when I cried."
Ethan's jaw tightened.
"What time was your interview?"
"Eight-thirty."
He glanced at the security officer.
"What time is it now?"
"Eight thirty-six."
Clara gave a small smile that failed to hide her disappointment.
"It doesn't matter anymore."
"It matters."
She shook her head.
"I already called HR. They marked me as a no-show."
For a brief moment Ethan didn't speak.
Instead, he reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and dialed a number from memory.
The call connected almost instantly.
"This is Ethan."
His voice became calm, but everyone nearby could hear the authority underneath it.
"Cancel the remaining Operations Assistant interviews."
A startled voice answered through the speaker.
"Sir... the candidates have already—"
"I said cancel them."
"But HR has already marked one applicant absent."
"I know exactly which applicant."
Silence.
Then...
"I'll be there in twenty minutes."
He ended the call.
Clara blinked.
"You didn't have to do that."
"I absolutely did."
"No, you don't understand."
"I think I do."
He looked directly at her.
"You sacrificed the opportunity to change your life because you refused to abandon my daughter."
Lily squeezed Clara's hand again.
"Daddy... everyone else walked away."
Ethan closed his eyes for a second.
That sentence hurt more than he expected.
Everyone else walked away.
Except one stranger.
He turned back to Clara.
"Would you come with me?"
She hesitated.
"I don't want special treatment."
"I'm not offering special treatment."
He smiled slightly.
"I'm offering the interview you earned."
Twenty-five minutes later, Clara stepped into Whitmore Capital's headquarters.
Only this time, she wasn't walking through the revolving doors alone.
Employees whispered as Ethan crossed the marble lobby with Lily in one arm while Clara walked beside them.
"Is that the CEO?"
"Who's the woman?"
"Didn't interviews start already?"
The whispers only grew louder when Ethan bypassed the executive elevators and headed straight toward Human Resources.
The HR director, Sandra Collins, was already waiting.
She looked nervous.
Very nervous.
"Mr. Whitmore..."
Ethan didn't waste time.
"Tell me what happened."
Sandra cleared her throat.
"Ms. Bennett called explaining she would be late due to an emergency involving a child."
"And?"
"Our policy states—"
"I didn't ask about policy."
She swallowed.
"I informed her she'd be considered absent."
"You never asked what kind of emergency?"
"No."
"You never considered rescheduling?"
"We have many applicants."
Ethan looked around the office.
Nearly fifty employees had quietly stopped working.
Every eye was on them.
"My daughter was the emergency."
Silence exploded across the room.
Sandra's face drained of color.
Lily buried her face against Ethan's shoulder.
"If Ms. Bennett had followed your policy instead of her conscience," Ethan continued, "my six-year-old daughter would have been left alone in one of the busiest train stations in Chicago."
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Finally, Ethan spoke again.
"Reschedule every candidate we inconvenienced today."
Then he looked at Clara.
May you like
"And if you're still willing..."
"My office is waiting."
